Skype for Business Server 2015 and O365 Cloud Voicemail RRS feed

  • Question

  • Dear all,

We have a customer using SfB Server 2015 and O365 Exchange UM for voicemail.

Recently they received a e-mail that Microsoft will transit Exchange UM for Cloud Voicemail and they worry about that.

Is that SfB 2015 support Cloud Voicemail for this transition? Or We need to help customer to migrate the SfB 2015 to SfB 2019?

    Thanks!

    Vincent

  • Hi,

Microsoft is retiring Unified Messaging (UM) in Exchange Online and replacing it with Cloud Voicemail and Auto Attendant services.  This impacts voicemail processing and Auto Attendant in Exchange Online for all customers using these workloads.

And according this article: Customers who are consuming any of the following features from Exchange Unified Messaging Online service are affected: Voicemail service/Auto Attendant service/ Fax integration.

I think it will have some change with the voicemail feature in your environment, however, voicemail migration is Microsoft driven; Admins are not required to do anything, given that the pre-requisite hybrid topology is established. So it seems you don’t need to do a test in a test tenant.

  • Hi Vincent,

    According this blog:

    https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/exchange/2019/02/08/retiring-unified-messaging-in-exchange-online/

Customers using the Lync 2013/Skype for Business 2015 to connect to Exchange UM Online will be transitioned to Cloud Voicemail by Microsoft.

Version interoperability and supported topologies for Cloud Voicemail are listed in the following table:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/skypeforbusiness/hybrid/plan-cloud-voicemail

So I think you don’t need to upgrade to Skype for Business 2019, Skype for Business 2015 with Exchange Online for Cloud Voicemail is still supported.

    Best Regards,
    Shaw Lu

  • If customer only use Exchange UM for voicemail (no auto attendant and no fax), is that the transition is no change to our existing settings? Can we simulate this transition in a testing tenant?

  • Hello Vincent,

Please be aware that Exchange UM Online and Cloud Voicemail (CVM) are two different platforms in O365. The biggest drawback of CVM is how the end-user can access his/her voicemail messages. Basically, subscriber access or end-user dialing a number and then entering his/her extension with the PIN to access voice messages is not supported.

However, the transition from Exchange UM Online is automatic for SFB Server 2015 and Lync Server 2013.

Just repeat again - there are a number of features of Exchange UM Online are not available and can be found at - https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/SkypeForBusiness/plan/exchange-unified-messaging-online-migration-support
