  • I have a client who runs a 2011 SBS server with exchange. The email seems to be working great except for one person. Everyone in the office uses the same domain except one person has gone out to godaddy and got their own domain name and has them host his email. so he has his own address not associated with the SBS server and does not use it for mail. He does have a user account on it however to do work on. The problem is anyone inside the office can send him an email to his purchased email account through godaddy. He receives it and when he response back it comes to the person it was sent to. However when they reply to any email he has sent them they get a failure to deliver notice.

    This is the error we get back

  • when replying this recient, outlook is using its cache which resolves its legacyDN but not smtp address,

    it is better to try to add the X500 address for that user, have a this as you reference :

  • I have tried clearing the cache. The problem still seems to be there. We have tried it w/o a local exchange mailbox and with one and still the same error message. A user is able to send to him but cannot reply back to him if he sends them an email.

  • From the header you posted, the email recipient is showing as larry@his-domain.net, but it is being resolved to what appears to be the legacyExchangeDN of Larry's account on the SBS. 

    Did Larry's account on the SBS ever have his larry@his-domain.net on it? 
    Does Larry's SBS account have the LegacyExchangeDN attribute populated? 
    Have you rebuilt the Offline Address Book? 
    Do the SBS users create local Outlook contacts from the GAL?
    Does Bob have a local Outlook Contact for Larry?
    Does this same thing happen if they reply from OWA?
    Is there a contact in the GAL for Larry?
    If you run Get-Recipient larry@his-domain.net in Exchange Management Shell, do you get results?

  • Looks to me that there is a Mail enabled contact for the user .Where ESMTP address is not set to default .

    Could you please check if there is a mail contact and setup a new Laptop with test user to see the same issue occurs .

    IF you find Mail Contact for the user check what mail policies applied in the email address tab .

  • add this as x500 address in the proxy addresses

    /O=FIRST ORGANIZATION/OU=First administrative group/cn=Recipients/cn=Larry User
