Files Protection Sizing Plan for Windows XP RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm going to backup users' files with DPM2010:

50 users, 20G data per user, replica: not important, recovery point: 1 time per day,

keep these data in storage pool (no tape device) for 30 days.

Would anyone tell me the estimated storage pool size I need? I mean how much storage space do I need for backup these data?

    Thanks!

  • Hi,

    these datas will require:

    - 30Go for the replica per user

    - Approx 8Go for the recovery points.

  • Hi,

Using your inputs : 20G data per user

calculating the required space will be as follow:
    Replica Volume/Per user = (Data source size x 3) / 2 = 30 GB per user
    Replica for 50 User = 50 * 30 = 1.5 TB

    Recovery point volume/Per User = (Data source size x retention range in days x 2) / 100 + 1600 MB = 13.5 GB per user
    RP for 50 User = 50 * 13.5 = 675 GB

you can refer to the following site for more info in How DPM Allocate Space

Also as i can see you use DPM 2010 - it contain a nice feature called auto grow when you are not sure how much space required by your data you can let the DPM do the task instead of you and just enable the auto growth option on your PGs

    Hope that help you

    Regards
