SMTP; Hop count exceeded - possible mail loop detected on message id

Question

When anyone is sending email to any incorrect email address then instead of sending NDR that "The email address you entered couldn't be found. Please check the recipient's email address and try to resend the message. If the problem continues, please contact your email admin." server is responding with below NDR.
A problem occurred during the delivery of your message likely due to a bad mail routing configuration. This could be a temporary situation. Please try to resend the message later. If the problem continues, contact your email admin.
<fqdn of server> gave this error:
SMTP; Hop count exceeded - possible mail loop detected on message id <MessageID@domain.extension>
We are in hybrid with O365. Other accepted domains in this mail server are behaving as expected. Issue is occurring even when an OnPrem user is sending email to incorrect email address.

Hi,
As per my knowledge, if the ExternalEmailAddress mail user attribute in O365 is not correct, we may get the NDR message, and this online attribute is synced from the TargetAddress attribute in Exchange on-premise.
We could get the fix in the following blog: Hop Count Exceeded – Possible Mail Loop.

Hi Manu,
I am not facing any issue with existing email addresses. Issue is occurring for non-existing email address like jfdiowffdknfs@mydomain.com (incase of typo - like if my id is rishi.pandit@mydomain.com and someone sends email to rishipandit@mydomain.com - A non existing email address)

If the mailbox is also an on-premise mailbox or a O365 mailbox?

Yes, the users having mailbox onprem itself are also facing same issue. I am having 3 more accepted domains in the same exchange setup and these domain are giving proper NDR message for non-existing email addresses.
