Upgrade from DPM2010 (OS: W2k8R2) to DPM2012 SP1 (OS: W2K12) RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

we are running several DPM 2010 servers on Windows Server 2008 R2.
We are planning to go for DPM 2012 next year.

For DPM 2012 SP1 we would like to use Windows Server 2012 as a base.
So I guess an inplace upgrade is not possible...

It would be nice if someone could tell me what is the supported way to upgrade from DPM 2010 running on Windows Server 2008R2 to DPM 2012 SP1 running on Windows Server 2012.

    Thanks in advance!

    regards

  • Hi,

    that is the way:

    1. Install DPM 2010 RU – Hotfix rollup package 7
    2. Update all the protection agents
    3. Backup DDPM DB
    4. Run the DPM 2012 setup to upgrade DPM 2010 to DPM 2012
    5.
Make a new DPM2012 backup of DPM DB to be restored
    later.
    6. Disconnect storage from old DPM 2012
    7. Shutdown old DPM 2012 server
    8.
Install a new Windows 2012 Server on new hardware
with the same name as the old DPM 2012
    9. Attach storage to new DPM 2012 server, and import the foreign dynamic disks
    10.
    Install DPM 2012
    11. Restore DPM DB to server 2012 from backup
    12. Run DPMSYNC-SYNC
    13. Install latest DPM 2012 RU3
    14. Make backup of DPM 2012 RU3 DPMDB for safe keeping
    15. Install DPM 2012 SP1
    16. Install Update Rollup 1 for System Center 2012 – Data Protection Manager
    17. Update agents to RU1 version.

You HAVE TO go to DPM2012 RTM and not DPM2012SP1 in the first step.

    regards

  • Hi Bkpfast,

It could be something like that: (I have not tested)

    1. Backup DPM 2010 DPMB
    2. Upgrade DPM 2010 to DPM 2012 RTM + SP1 RTM. Upgrading from System Center Data Protection Manager 2010: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh848291.aspx.
    3. Backup DPM 2012 DPMB
    4. Uninstall DPM 2012
    5. Install Windows 2012 RTM + (Upgrade/fresh install) on your server - keep name / same domain. Upgrading previous retail versions of Windows Server to Windows Server 2012: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj574204.aspx
    6. Install DPM 2012 RTM + SP1 RTM
    7. [If Fresh install] Attach the DPM storage pool disks to your server and import the foreign disks in disk management.
    8. Restore DPM 2012 DPMDB
    9. Open the DPM console and run consistency checks for all the data sources (Carefull, it could take a long time depending the size of your datasources)

  • Hi Stephane,

    thanks for the reply!
I thought about that option but what I am missing is an official way of upgrading from MS.
The "upgrade guide" doesn't say anything about that.

It is possible that we get several new 2012 Servers with activated dedup so unfortunately we need Windows Server 2012 as a base OS for DPM.

    Thank you very much
