Power BI with Power Pivot and Power Query RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello MS Support,

These questions are on behalf of a customer who is planning to buy E3 licenses, can you please help and clear these queries:

    1) Can we publish a model that was developed in Excel 2013 PowerPivot using Power BI designer?

    2) Does Power BI designer work with Power Query? Can we write DAX formulas for calculated columns and measures?

    3) The model that was designed using Power BI designer - can it go only on the cloud version of Power BI? Can I deploy the model to SSAS tabular?

A quick response will be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Urvashi

No. Not at this point. Perhaps this functionality would be added in the future.

    2) Does Power BI designer work with Power Query? Can we write DAX formulas for calculated columns and measures?

Yes and No. It works with Power Query (well actually, it has Power Query in built). Microsoft seems to be moving away from the Power* Names (Power Query, Power Pivot, Power View) and using generic names - "Get Data", "Data Model", "Reports" with "Power BI" the only Power* term being used. But it is the exact same thing. Designer has Power Query inbuilt.

No, currently you cannot write DAX Formulas using designer.
The feature is in "Planned" stage per this support page

    3) The model that was designed using Power BI designer - can it go only on the cloud version of Power BI? Can I deploy the model to SSAS tabular?

No, you cannot at present deploy it to SSAS Tabular, unlike Excel PowerPivot which can easily go to SSAS Tabular.
