MMC could not create the snap-in Event Viewer RRS feed

    when I try to invoke the event viewer in Vista I get the following error:
    MMC could not create the snap-in.
    Name: Event Viewer
    CLSID: FX:{b05566ad-fe9c-7a4cbb7cb510}

    I am having this problem.  All of the information I find is one or two years old. I have seen several queries about it but never a complete solution posted.

     

    I was wondering if anyone knew how to fix this problem

    Hi,

     

    Before moving on, could you please follow the steps below to verify MMC Snap-in settings.

     

    1. Click Start, in the Start Search box type "mmc" and press Enter.

    2. Click "File->Add/Remove Snap-ins".

    3. In the box of "Selected Snap-ins", please click on and remove all entries except "Console root".

     

    Please click OK to quit.

     

    If any error message is encountered, please let me know details.

    Hi, I too have the exact same message. As far as I know I have never added any snap-ins. When I followed your instructions above about - there was only Console root in listed. I have 2 places where I get this error - Task Scheduler and Event Viewer. Is there a way to reset or delete and restart something to get past this error. Thank-You.

    Hello,

    We encountered this error on a Server 2008 server, I found that .net 1.1 framework had been installed as part of an application install process, but that most of the mmc snap-ins require .net 2.0 or later.  Upgrading the .net version fixed the problem.

    Thank-you for your post.

     

    I think it is on the right track - I think.   I have now installed asp.net 3.5.   I downloaded the .net cleanup tool and ran that.   It gave me the option to remove 1.1 - so I did that.

     

    I am still having the error occur.

     

    I also found a website that will show you the current level of .net installed within IE. 

     

     
     
    When I visit the link above on the machine with the MMC snap-in error - IE will hang.   This is before and after the removal of .net 1.1.
     
    By the way, I don't remember installing .net 1.1 and in my add/remove program list .net 1.1 was never listed.   3.5 is now in the list.   I have also run registry cleaners to try to remove any errors/pointers that were / are wrong.
     
    If I could ask you, did you get around the problem or did you have to re-install?

    The issue occurred because Windows Vista requires elevated user rights when a .dll file is registered for enhanced security, and the Administration Tools Pack is not installed by a user who has administrative user rights. Microsoft KB930056 provides a simple solution and workaround for this error:

    1. Open a command prompt with administrative privileges (instructions here).
    2. Copy and paste the following commands into the elevated command prompt, or you can save the commands into a batch file, and then execute the batch script:

    Will this fix (adding the list of files in the command prompt) work with XP systems?  I've had this problem for awhile, but never bothered to try and fix it, b/c it's usually not an issue.  I get this error with a couple of things, including *services*.

    I ran the command prompt with MMC, and there was nothing there except the "console root", per Robinson Zhang's suggestion.

    This is with an XP SP3 system

    After I install WindowServer 2003, I open manage on MyComputer, and I see error "The snap-in below, referenced in this document, has been restricted by policy. Contact your administrator for details. Computer Management" Can you help me!

    In case of windows xp(sp2-32 bit), The administrator log in also if the message is coming like this as during trying of gpedit.msc



    MMC could notcreate snap-in because of the current user policies.
    Name: Group Policy Object editor
    CLSID :{8FC0B734-A0E1-11D1-A7D3-0000F87571E3}


    as it was restricted the control panel from the group policy object editor,now the control panel is not getting acessible.also the right click for every option is not coming.

    Can anybody give any solution for the above matter?

    Unistalling all .Net installations worked for me.

    Try to copy the v2.0.50727 folder usually under C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727 from and working system on to the broken system and that should fix your problem.

    I'm seeing the same error in Windows 7 Professional x64. System keeps trying to do restore and does manage to recover somewhat. I discovered this Event Viewer error due to system having issues, an occasional blue screen. I did CHKDSK and have seen no issues. Was hoping the Event Viewer would shed some light...but that's when I discovered MMC 3.0 error. Error message in Event Viewer says "The snap-in might not have been installed correctly". Please advise.

    Both my wife and I run Win7. Machinges were working fine until we went to 7 SP 1 recently. Both of us lost the ability to use our CD/DVD burners. I was quickly able to fix mine by going into gpedit.msc and fixing it. When I tried to fix it on wife's, I got this "MMC could not create the snap-in" error.

    It might have been when I isntalled Win 7 SP1 that my troubles occurred. I did discover that the Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2488113) seem to exasterbate the problem. Is still has not installed on my P6T SE ASUS with an Intel Gulftown processor installed. After playing around and reinstalling SP1, my Event Viewer seems to working again along with another third party app that had stopped working when problem was first encountered.

    Eass fix for me.  Had the same message, but there was some information saying that "something was using x amount of bytes and if I wanted to delete it.  I did, and everything came to life as normal.  This was on a Windows XP machine.

    For me repairing windows worked.
    Here is the tutorial. If you don't have the windows 7 installation disk there is a link to download the windows 7 .iso on that page.

    NOTE: It will probably say you can't install because your version of windows is newer than what's on the disk. To fix that run "Setup.exe" in Windows Vista (SP2) compatibility mode.
    To open the .iso file I recommend 7zip http://www.7-zip.org/

    No need to replace .NET,  No need to delete     machine.config.
