Transportable VSS SAN Shadow Copy RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

Is DPM2010 capable of 'off-host' backup aka 'transportable VSS SAN Shadow Copy', if so, what is needed to configure it?

  • Hi,

DPM cannot create backups using 'transportable VSS SAN Shadow Copy', but DPM can do restores using Transportable VSS San shadow copy if the DPM Storage pool is using SAN Storage that supports hardware snapshots.

Before you can recover data on a SAN using hardware snapshots, you must have the following: A SAN where hardware snapshot functionality is enabled; a SAN with the capability to create a clone and split a clone to make it writable, and the protected computer and the DPM server connected to the same SAN.

  • Hi Mike

On TechEd Europe I heart some other Information. With the HIT Kit DPM is also able to create San Backup.

DPM only support SAN based copy for initial replication (IR) creation and restores.  All normal backups are over the LAN, however, you can use a dedicated backup network so all backups are done using a seperate dedicated backup LAN.

I tried, but at the moment not successful.

    Kind Regards
