USMT 5.0 Migrate Pinned Start Screen Tiles and Taskbar Icons?

  • Hi,

    I am querying whether its possible to migrate start screen tiles from Windows 8 to 8.1 using USMT 5.0?

    We have had a look at doing this but cannot find a way to achieve this task.

    Any ideas?

  • Hi,

    This is part of the CONFIG.xml, USMT can migrate these settings.

     <component displayname="Taskbar and Start Menu" migrate="yes" ID="appearance_and_display\taskbar_and_start_menu">
            <component displayname="Microsoft-Windows-stobject" migrate="yes" ID=""/>
            <component displayname="Microsoft-Windows-explorer" migrate="yes" ID=""/>

    The Start screen replaces the Start menu in Windows 8\8.1. This option still can be used in Windows 8\8.1

  • This does nothing in Windows 10. I have all of these setting at yes and my start menu layout and settings aren't saved. In my test, I push fullscreen start menu and I pinned various apps in various folder. Nothing is saved during USMT or it isn't restored.

    SAme problem with file association. I use the powershell function to export and import defaultapps, but when Microsoft decide that it reset to default, it reset to Microsoft Default, not the one I imported.

    When doing USMT, the file association aren't saved/restored, even if everything in the config file is at yes. Generated the file on a Windows 10 1703, trying USMT from a 1703 to a 1703 with the same software (even same machine in fact) and I still either get error saying my file association as reset or it just reset to microsoft default without a message. Is it so hard to keep the association or at least, use the default apps I submitted instead?
