How do I Update PowerPoint 2013 Slide Deck Preview Thumbnail? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I often copy previous presentations and revamp them for my next presentation. I notice that after changing the title slide in PowerPoint 2013 the embedded thumbnail.jpeg file is not updated. Ordinarily I would not care, but recently I am presenting to two competing comanies and I cannot have the branding for one company on the presentation for another.

Short of completely recreating the deck, is there a way to force the update of the thumbnail.jpeg file in the PPTX?

    Thanks!

    Matthew

  • OK, I discovered that You can go to Backstage and chose Properties | Advanced Properties | Summary | Save preview with picture. Uncheck and save then recheck and save and PowerPoint will refresh the thumbnail...unless it doesn't. Which was true for half of my decks.

    For those I:

    1. Renamed the file to zip
    2. Deleted the thumbnail.
    3. Renamed the file back to PPTX
    4. Opened in PowerPoint.
    5. Let PowerPoint perform the repair.
    6. Toggle the preview setting as above

  • THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS! It worked great.  I too was working out a PPP for 2 clients. Could not have one see the other. Thanks for helping me overcome the thumbnail issue!

  • I cannot find this option in PowerPoint 2016. The Backstage is quite different in appearance. My previews are from the original presentations and do not update when I change the presentation. I want these previews to refresh to the current first slide.

  • Also had this problem, thanks again for the instruction to remove the thumbnail!

But also like the other poster, PPT 2016 doesn't seem to want to make a new thumbnail and Backstage doesn't have the option mentioned here. Not a showstopper but hyper annoying.

  • MICROSOFT:  I know they usually ignore this forum but I need to lodge a rant.

This bug is a security failure.  Using a previous presentation to start a new one is common.  And following the first part of this fix only replaces the old thumbnail.  "Inspect" the file to strip hidden and personally identifying info.  Old preview jpg still there. Amazing.

Unlike another poster, I don't regard this as less than a showstopper.  I have to let ALL my legal clients know that PPT 2016 does not update the preview thumbnail.

An average user will NOT be able to follow the "fix" outlined here.  This is a pro hack, not a fix.  Most of my clients still don't know where their files live, less yet that they are based on XML that can be edited in a ZIP file.

I have used PPT professionally for over 20 years.  PPT 2016 is the buggiest version ever released. And like the bug in this thread, many are just knucklehead omissions.

    FIX IT!

  • I found that this sequence also fixes the problem:

    • open the deck with powerpoint
    • copy the first slide
    • paste it in second location
    • delete the first slide
    • save & close the deck

  • Thank you!!! I've been trying to figure this out all week, I've got PPT 2016 and all the solutions I found were not compatible. Nice simple fix.

  • In 2016, go to File --> Info.

Then, at the top right you'll see a menu (Properties) with one option labelled "Advanced Properties".

You'll find the setting at the bottom of the "Summary" tab.

Thanks! I did what you posted but instead of copying/pasting I duplicated the title slide and deleted the original. It also worked.

  • I agree with this poster. Not only am I having problems with the thumbnails not showing the correct preview when I create a new pptx slide show from a previously created one, but also when I start from scratch. Even though under Properties/Advanced Properties the box saying "Save Preview Picture" is checked, the preview picture doesn't display...UNLESS I go through the iteration included in this thread.

I see this has been a problem since 2013. 2013!!!! OMG! I just recently started using this version of Powerpoint and am ready to uninstall it and try to go back to the 2010 version because this is so annoying. Is this bug going to be squashed anytime soon??

Like the poster before me...FIX IT!!

  • Next solution:

    1) Change cover
    2) Save file in another directory
    3) Delete old file
    4) Move new to old

    cheers
