Native backup Full works, but Differential returns "A differential backup cannot be started or restored because no full backup exists." RRS feed

  • Question

  • The weekly stsadm native Full backup works fine, and shows up in CA backup history. However, the Differential doesn't seem to recognize it, and therefore won't run.

The cmds are pretty much the same, but have two different backup-dir. Full goes to \\servername\full, and naturally, use -backupmethod full

    set backup-dir=\\servername\differential\
    set sp-dir=C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\BIN\
    set path=%path%;%sp-dir%
    echo Begin incremental backup.
    stsadm -o backup -directory %backup-dir% -backupmethod differential >> backuplogINCREMENTAL.txt

    Any ideas?

  • Hi scogordo,

Had the backup directory been renamed or the backup file moved out the backup directory?

If this is the problem, please change the name back or move the full backup file back to original directory and try to perform the differential backup again.

If it still can’t help, do another full backup and then differential backup.

    "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\BIN\stsadm" -o backup -directory \\XYZABC  -backupmethod full

    "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\BIN\stsadm" -o backup -directory \\XYZ  -backupmethod differential
