Enterprise custom fields - mandatory RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

We are using Project Server 2013. We have created multiple EPT using PDP with custom filed. In Each EPT we made few fields as mandatory. When we create the new project using one of the EPT by entering the mandatory fields, we were able to Save. But when we try to check in the project, it is requesting to fill the mandatory custom fields which are not part of the EPT. How to fix this issue.

    Thanks in advance, Taj

  • Hello Taj,

You can use the Department Custom field to achieve this. Using Department custom field you can associate custom fields to specific department like Software, Infra etc. Later while creating a Project you can specify the department for the project (through EPT or using Department Field) and after this you need to enter values for only those required fields which belongs to this specific department. You can find more information on department custom fields at below article.

    Hope this helps.

    Thank you,

  • Hi Arun,

This is not an issue. Indeed all required custom fields must be filled out before saving the project (unless they are controlled by a workflow). It means that you have to propose the required custom fields in the project creation PDP.

That being said, I'd suggest to limit the number of required fields since it can cause unwanted behavior as you're experencing now.

    Hope this helps,

  • Hi Guillaume,

Thanks for your response. According to our requirement we need to create four EPT (e.g. software, infra, service etc.). And each EPT will have different custom field with some mandatory fields. How can we achieve this.

    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks in advance, Taj

  • Hi Kiran,

Thanks for your response. We have tried, it is working fine. But we are facing some issue

i.e. We are using Project Department field for the project type e.g software, infra and we need the filed for 'Project Department'' to classify the project belongs to which department. How can we achieve this.

When we tried to rename the Project Department into Project Type, it is not allowing. Is it possible to rename?

    Thanks in advance, Taj

  • Hi Arun,

You cannot rename the department field. In addition to this, I'd mention that the department feature is not intended to acheive what you want to do. This is more like a filtering feature.

Can you please explain the business need more in details? It seems to me that the EPT suits to your need, but you have to remove the required attribute from the fields definition.

    Hope this helps,

  • Hi Guillaume,

We have four type of projects (software, infra, ). Each project type need to collect different type of information (fields). And each project type will have few mandatory fields which need to be field by users while creating the project. These mandatory fields are not common for all project type. When we create project using a project type(EPT) it is requesting fill all the mandatory fields which are not part of the particular project type. i.e. it is requesting to fill all the mandatory fields created in project server. Our requirement is, while creating the project it should request to fill only the mandatory fields which are part of the project type (EPT). How to resolve this issue.

    Thanks in advance, Taj

  • Hello Taj,

Try below steps and check if that helps.

    1) Add Lookup table values for "Department" Lookup table. (Like Software, Infra)

    2) Associate the required custom fields to appropriate department

    3) Add the "Department" CF in the PDP. The first PDP for your EPT

    4) While creating Project, specify the Department for the Project and it will show you only those fields which belongs to that department.

    Hope this helps.

    Thank you,

    Kiran K.

  • Hi,

In addition to excellent Kiran's answer, here is an article I wrote on my blog about this procedure:
