Are the backups good after reinstalling? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello Community

There is a WSS 3.0 farm that exists right now that
consists of 2 servers, 1 with SQL Server and 1 with WSS 3.0
    installed.

I have to reinstall the Windows 2003 Server and WSS 3.0 on the
    server they reside on.

The question is if I backup the web applications first, after
I reinstall the O/S and WSS 3.0 will I be able to restore everything back
from the server with SQL database on it or does reinstalling the O/S and WSS 3.0
mean that whatever WSS 3.0 backups are on SQL Server on the other
server in the farm are no longer any good?

        Thank you

  • If I will be in your place I will apply the following action plan:

    -       make a backup of all the content databases from SQL server

    -       reinstall the wss3.0 with a new configuration database

    -       attach the content db from the backup to your new web apps

Before reinstalling you farm, check you custom solutions, webparts, AAM,.. because all of these need to be redeployed and reconfigured. Here you have a TechNet article regarding backup and recovery tools http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc263427(office.12).aspx

  • Hi,

Take backups of your 12 hive, virtual directory and GAC.

Then stop all sharepoint services from services.msc this will stop the communication from your WFE to SQL server.

Now after uninstall and reinstall of operating system place these backups at their place after installing WSS.

Then execute a configuration wizard and this should help you out.

    Thanks, Rahul Rashu
