  • Question

  • Does a KMS-version of Office 2010 have to be installed prior to activating the KMS host / host services?

Answers

  • No. A KMS host for Office does not need to have Office installed. However, the KMS will not activate Office installations until a minimum of 5 clients request activation.

  • When activating Office 2010 KMS clients, VAMT 2.0 is used to monitor which clients have been activated - for this purpose it can be installed at any time.

  • Thanks!! The reason I asked is because that would be the only way to get to the "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14>" prompt in cmd.

Also, when should the VAMT 2.0 tool be installed (in regards to order)? Does it matter?

  • Okay, so is there a way to check the expiration on the KMS key from the KMS host server? Also, how can I check the computers with KMS-versions of software in VAMT 2.0?

  • Once you've installed and activated the KMS host key on the KMS host, it will not expire.  You will not need to re-activate unless you change the hardware of your KMS host machine substantially.

KMS clients (e.g. Office 2010) expire every six months.  By default, they are re-activated every seven days by connecting with the KMS host.  To check how many days are left on your KMS clients, run the cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus command.

Please watch the VAMT 2.0 video on using VAMT and checking status:
