SCCM 2007 R3 to SCCM 2012 R2 SP1 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

In my environment all SCCM 2007 R3 secondary site configured with Server Share DP ( exist in same SCCM 2007 secondary site server). As per MS suggestion we cannot do in place upgrade as SCCM 2012 DP.

As per MS workaround : "We need enable a standard distribution point on the secondary site server and then redistribute the content to that standard distribution point. This does not use network bandwidth, and when completed, you can uninstall the distribution point on the server share, remove the server share, and then upgrade the distribution point and secondary site."

instead of above method can we do uninstall SCCM 2007 secondary site and install as SCCM 2012 DP utilising the same server hardware.

Any pros/cons for both of above the methods.

    TIA

Answers

  • Sure you can do that but you have to redistribute all content over the WAN then.

  • I can't make that decision for you, it's your choice to make. Option 1 is probably the fastest and option 2 is probably the cleanest. Both options will get you were you want to be.

  • As long as you still have the old environment you can still use it to upgrade the clients. An alternative could be to discover the devices in the new environment and use the client push of the new environment.

  • Thanks for the update Torsten.

I will configure the DP and prestage the content.

which is the best approach as point of you. Can you please check and suggest best approach based on the complexity on following options.

    Option 1 :

We need enable a standard distribution point on the secondary site server and then redistribute the content to that standard distribution point. This does not use network bandwidth, and when completed, you can uninstall the distribution point on the server share, remove the server share, and then upgrade the distribution point and secondary site."

    Option 2:

can we do uninstall SCCM 2007 secondary site and install as SCCM 2012 DP utilising the same server hardware.

    TIA

  • It depends on the WAN and number of clients at that location. How many clients are there? What about the bandwidth? I'd prefer a DP (instead of a secondary) if possible.

  • I will configure only SCCM 2012 DP.

in my existing environment all SCCM 2007 R3 Secondary sites are configured as Server Share DP ( Its exists on same Secondary site server) so by default not possible to go with In-Place upgrade as SCCM 2012 DP.

So i am in confusion following which option i can use . If 2 days down time also no issue but need best approach based on complexity of the following 2 options.

    TIA

  • They are both valid options. Option 1 will save you all the hassle of sending all the package over the WAN again and option 2 allows you to start with clean state again, but does require you to send all the package again (with or without pre-staging). There is no right or wrong here.

  • Thanks Peter.

Option 1 also i need to enable the Standard DP on the existing SCCM 2007 secondary site and re-distribute the content. Uninstall existing server share DP and then upgrade the distribution point and secondary site."

Option 2 : if you suggested option 2 , I will prestage the content on new SCCM 2012 DP

as per your Technical experience can you please suggest best option out of 2.

as per your experience can you please let me know the pros/Cons of above 2 options

  • Thanks for the update Peter.

As suggested I going with Option 2 ( Uninstall the SCCM 2007 Secondary and enable the SCCM 2012 DP utilising the existing hardware)

What about the existing SCCM 2007 client migration. Can i use existing SCCM 2007 environment software distribution method to install SCCM 2012 client before configuring the SCCM 2012 DP?

Please suggest in this scenario which method we use to install SCCM 2012 clients.

    TIA
