Edge crashes and other issues with IE11

    Question

  • Hi

I've been passed on to this forum from the office365 support team as they consider the issue I'm having to be a fault with Internet Explorer.

For a while now Edge closes itself as soon as I try to open it event log says...

Faulting application name: MicrosoftEdge.exe, version: 11.0.10240.16771, time stamp: 0x56fa27b5

Faulting module name: eModel.dll, version: 11.0.10240.16771, time stamp: 0x56fa234c

    Exception code: 0xc0000409

    Fault offset: 0x00000000001122d3

    Faulting process id: 0x1580

    Faulting application start time: 0x01d19bc11c2364d6

    Faulting application path: C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\MicrosoftEdge.exe

    Faulting module path: C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\eModel.dll

    Report Id: 29bd26ae-51c6-4c0b-9f23-20491f3eef73

    Faulting package full name: Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_20.10240.16384.0_neutral__8wekyb3d8bbwe

    Faulting package-relative application ID: MicrosoftEdge

My Initial problem I had with Office365 was that I didn't have the option to pin apps.  If I reset IE it works ok, if I restart the PC it stops working again.  Pin apps works if I use inprivate browsing. I have disabled all add-ons and that made no difference.

I have tried with a different user and all works ok for that user, including edge.

If I delete my local profile, it creates a new one for me when I log on and all is fine for a few days until Edge stops working again and all the faults come back.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

    Thanks

    Jason

  • Hi Jason,

it sounds like you have a corrupt Pinned sites file (MS .website).

you could try deleting your current Start page, Quick launch Start menu links to Office 365 and then going to your Office 365 protal in MS Edge and selecting the Pin to Start menu option....

Note that pinning with Edge and IE11 are different. If you pin a web site then it should automatically open in the browser (IE11 or Edge) that was used to create the Start menu pin.

If you are on a company computer, your system administrators or your office 365 administrators may be resetting your start menu pinned sites list or they may have restrictions about which web sites can be accessed.

    Regards.

  • Hi Jason,

Based on your description, I want to confirm that have you made any changes before the issue occurred? it seems that there is something wrong with Edge.

I noticed that you have tried with a different user and all works ok for that user, including edge. Sounds like there is something wrong with your current user profile, please fix it.

Fix a corrupted user profile(apply to Windows 10)

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/fix-corrupted-user-profile#1TC=windows-7

Cleaning temporary files may be a good idea, please try it.

  • Hi Tao

If I delete the local copy of my profile and then log back it, it creates a new roaming profile for me and everything works for a while, the next day all of the faults are back.

Is deleting my profile the same as your fixing a user profile repair?

cleaned temporary profiles. made no difference.

  • Hi Jason,

Cleaning temporary files may be a good idea, please try it.

If the problem still persists, we may try reinstalling Edge.

  • Hi Jason,

I want to confirm that which app you want to pin? Please follow the steps in these links and check the result.

Pin apps to the navigation bar in Office 365:

    https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Pin-apps-to-the-navigation-bar-in-Office-365-d536512c-b0f7-49fd-b8db-a8a967e23f23

Add or remove tiles on the Office 365 app launcher:

In addition, for Office issue, we’d suggest you to confirm that in Windows Office forum first for good measure.

  • Hi Tao

the apps I am trying to pin are on the my apps page if I click on custom made apps AND the Microsoft apps the only option I have is "app details", I can't pin or unpin.

Now that edge is working I thought I would try on there, the same thing happens.

I have posted on the office forums and they have given up and said it is an IE/Edge issue and pointed me here.

attached is a screen shot of what options I see when I click on an app.

  • upgraded to windows 10 1511 and edge crashes again previous fix for edge didn't work this time.  AND I still can't pin apps.

  • edge crashes again

Sounds like you have an interferer.  Unfortunately Edge WER reports don't give us any Stack information or even Loaded Modules; so you would need to capture a dump and format it to get those details.  Otherwise you could try to substitute for the list of loaded modules by using Resource Monitor's Associated Modules list as close as possible to the crash.  In fact, if the crash window has a different list that could be significant too; e.g. some crashes are due to modules being unloaded while some of their addresses are still on the Stack.

previous fix for edge didn't work this time.

Looks like the blogger (Fernz) is still offering help with that.  Someone reported your symptom, was offered help but never returned.

    still can't pin apps

Try using Narrator as an assistant for this?  Press Win+Esc  for that.
