MMC could not create snap-in RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I have been having problem with a Windows 2008 on which I have the problem indicated in the title. That server is used for WDS. Everything started when I tried to install updates. That server hasn't been updated in some time, a few months, and it had 52 updates pending. After, I restarted the server, it appear that only 4 patches installed correctly, all the others failed and I now have a server that's missing a number of MMC which open with the error mentionned in the title "MMC could not create snap-in".

I am sure its because one or more update as I get the following message in the event log application

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: Microsoft-Windows-CAPI2
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 11
    Date:  2010-07-22
    Time:  10:26:56
    User:  N/A
    Computer: DLLLCH05SRV005.csss-dll.rtss.qc.ca
The description for Event ID ( 11 ) in Source ( Microsoft-Windows-CAPI2 ) could not be found. It contains the following insertion string(s):
http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3/static/trustedr/en/authrootstl.cab, A required certificate is not within its validity period when verifying against the current system clock or the timestamp in the signed file.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

I downloaded the certificate and added it to the computer store but the updates don't want to install anyway. Here is a list of MMC plugins that won't work anymore:

    • Computer Management
    • Event viewer
    • Group policy objet
    • NAP Client Configuration
    • Server Manager
    • Share and storage management
    • Storage explorer
    • Task scheduler
    • Terminal service configuration
    • Terminal service manager
    • TPM management
    • Windows firewall with advanced security
    • Windows server backup

I have been searching for this error but so far I haven't found any answer that directly apply to me or that works. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

  • It sounds like there are multiple issues, let's work on the Windows
Update issue first. Could you run the SUR tool,
and post the log files on skydrive as well as the
    %systemroot%\Windows\windowsupdate.log file?

  • Hi,

The files are on my skydrive, but all I can do is embed the files, link is not working for some reason. I ran the tool manually

    <iframe title ="Preview" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" frameborder="0" style="width:98px;height:115px;padding:0;background-color:#fcfcfc;" src="http://cid-61af5367d765947c.office.live.com/embedicon.aspx/.Public/WindowsUpdate.log"></iframe>
    <iframe title ="Preview" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" frameborder="0" style="width:98px;height:115px;padding:0;background-color:#fcfcfc;" src="http://cid-61af5367d765947c.office.live.com/embedicon.aspx/.Public/CheckSUR.persist.log"></iframe>
    <iframe title ="Preview" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" frameborder="0" style="width:98px;height:115px;padding:0;background-color:#fcfcfc;" src="http://cid-61af5367d765947c.office.live.com/embedicon.aspx/.Public/CheckSUR.log"></iframe>

As for the problem at hand. I have tried installing all update (44 in all) except those relating to .Net update. Windows Update didn't report any error and after I rebooted, only the .Net update were availlable. I tried installing only one of them, kb974470 which was a failure. I went to lunch and on my return, all 48 updates were again ready to install. So now I know its related to Windows Update but how could I reset it on Windows 2008.

As a side note, I wish I could install update on my servers without worriyng everytime if its gonna break it. And also, those ____ .net update are the only one which have regular failure and are a ____ to fix, it would be nice if this didn't happen at all....... quality control guys..........

I also realise that this thread should be in windows update so if a mod could make the change

  • Well busy afternoon,

I was able to install all the updates with the notable exception of all the .Net patches. There are 4 of them and here are the KB number:

    • kb974470
    • kb979910
    • kb982525
    • kb982533

I have tried installing them all at once, individually by date in order and in reverse order. Nothing will do, I do get the following error on all of them when I try to install them, "code 80070643 windows update encountered an unknown error". So back to google to see if I can figure out this one. For sure its related to those damn .Net patches.

  • Hi,

Have you tried the steps on the following article:

    Windows Update error 80070643

If the problem continues, please collect the %systemroot%\Windows\windowsupdate.log file. I have created a workspace for you. You can upload the log files to the following link.  (Please choose "Send Files to Microsoft")

  • Here is likely one of the problems,
    2010-07-22    14:06:03:290     960    ed8    Agent    WARNING: LoadLibrary failed for
    srclient.dll with hr:8007007e
This probably refers to this error,
    ERROR_MOD_NOT_FOUND                                        winerror.h
    # The specified module could not be found.
One thing we may want to try is verifying the OS protected files, this
can be achieved from an administrative command prompt,
    sfc /scannow

  • Hi Bruce,

Your link and the fix-it worked for me. Finally installed all the .Net updates and MMCs works again like it should. Thanks for your help.
