  • Question

  • I have a user with a stand alone laptop NOT connected to any domain

my local security account password policy is

Enforce password history - 0 passwords remembered

Maximum password age - 42 days

Minimum password age - 0 days

    Minimum password length - 0

Password must meet complexity requirements - disabled

Store passwords using reversible encryption - disabled

im logged in as administrator and using an elevated command prompt

When I run net user John "" I get the following error

The password does not meet the password requirements. Check the minimum password length,

password complexity and password history requirements

I just want to set user "John" to no password, my policy should allow this.

    why doesn't this work

    suggestions please

  • Hi,

Can you create user John without password via control panel?

    Best Regards,

The user already exists so don't need to create it, I just need to delete the password

The used needed to add a password to transfer firmware via SFTP.

Now we want to set the password back to empty.

  • Hi,

Please run Gpupdate /force and restart the computer.

Also, could you change the password via this?

Press Windows Key + R and enter lusrmgr.msc. Now press Enter or click OK. From the left pane, select Users. In the right pane, double-click the John account, choose “Set Password…”. Set the password to blank. Check if this works.

    Best Regards,

  • This is really strange. Could you change the passwords of other user accounts? If this is the case, please delete John account and recreate it.

  • windows 7 allowed me to create a new user on the PC without a password.

I was able to use this new account with having to make a password, but when I made a password it wouldn't then allow me to remove it.

it seems Microsoft in their "wisdom" have hard coded or hidden a setting in the registries that once a password is created you cannot the revert to a "NO" password

massively helpful if this is the case, I now have to spend 2+ days formatting the disk and reinstalling everything.
