is 70-536 obsolete now with VS2010 and .NET4? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am quite ready to take my first cert: the 70-536. My plan was to take both winform and asp.net certification.

But right now I see that with the coming out of .NET4 and VS2010 things changed, and 70-536 is no longer a pre-requisite that blocks other exams. Now I see that there is directly one exam that cover .NET 4 + winForm + WPF (that were *three* different exams last year!).

What do you suggest me? I think it's a waste of money the 70-536. I've learn many things but I think it's not smart to follow the old path.

  • The exam itself may no longer be required, but the knowledge that you would gain while studying for 70-536 is still very relevant and very useful. The "basic" knowledge of the Framework tested by that exam is no longer covered by the new certifications, which is a pity in my opinion.

If I had to evaluate a job candidate based on his or her certifications, I would prefer someone who had passed 70-536 (plus either 70-502 or 70-505 or 70-511) over someone who "only" had one of the new certs such as 70-511.

  • It is better to give 70-536 exam anyway. However, right now .NET exams not showing 70-536 as part of pre-requisite, but I guess will be added later when exam launch, as 70-536 is core exam about .NET 2.0, 3.5, and even 4.0. Without 70-536 exam, you can't be well certified.
