Rename Folder

Question
-
I just set up a brand-new computer using Vista Home Premium. It somehow came with a random user name ("nm") for me. I changed the user account to be my correct name, but the folder name in the file system is still "nm", so all my files re in C:\Users\nm. In the file Explorer (or whatever the Vista equivalent is called) there is no option to change the folder name, and in the Properties dialog for it the name is grayed out and cannot be edited. How do I rename the folder?

First you would need to create a new folder inside C:\users\ called <thenameyouwant>. then run regedit and goto:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ ProfileList
In the right-pane, double-click the ProfileImagePath value and set the correct path and folder name.
Hope that works for you

i just read your issue and renamed my user
computer management
local users and groups
renamed my "admin123" to "admin999"
did a right click rename, and got props and renamed there as well
so name and full-name are now admindude999
logged off, logged on, bam...
it renamed my desktop shortcut...
oddly my path in explorer shows the new name in one place, but in another, still shows an unrenamable admin123
hmmm
grrr....
gonna go edit (kill) my registry
will let you know what (if it) works
may start with search and "match string" x:\users\admin123 and then paste in x:\users\admin999
joy
then if that aint enuf... will do all strings with admin123 to admin999
better make a restore point, eh...
gonna just back up the whole reg...
will ping ya later

so
oldname vs newname...
first i get the props of my old profile folder, and lose the read only bit, just for kicks...
then
i find the registry strings that matched x:\users\oldname and put in x:\users\newname
(not included the string, but matched the just the whole string, so check that box...)
then logged off
then logged back on
got an error and it gave ne a temp profile
ok
then explorer, go to my oldname folder under users and renamed it to newname
bam
then logged off and back on
only error i pulled was from pdffactorypro, looking for folders using x:\users\newname\documents\pdf files
so i make another folder under uswers called my oldname and copied the pdf files folder from newname\documents to oldname\documents (the new folder i just made using the oldname...)
got a few uas-like prompts, yadaya...
bam
no more errors
all other apps work fine so far... even office 2007...!!!
foxit reader was a bit pissy, could not fint its recent pdf's, so what
ideally if i have the time i will go key by key in the registry and replace all instances of oldname with newname and all will be fine
but for the basics, got'er done in 5 minutes...!
guess i really ARE a mcse...!!!
BRILLIANT...!!!
yeehaa
have fun... if you dare
