Moving Clients from WSUS to SUP RRS feed

  • Question

  • As part of our migration from CM07 to CM12 we will begin managing software updates with SUP.  In the past we used a local WSUS server with a Group Policy to point to it.  Once SUP is enable don the client,  Will all the old updates be reinstalled the first time or will the sup deployment of updates not run ones that are already installed?

  • Whether you are doing the install against a WSUS server or SUP, the Windows Update client on the workstation only installs patches that are required (it's pretty smart).  Nothing gets reinstalled.

When moving over to ConfigMgr for Software Updates, you can get rid of the Group Policy setting pointing the Windows Update client at your old WSUS Server.  That way, the ConfigMgr Client and Group Policy don't keep fighting to control that setting.

    I hope that helps,

  • If I remove the GPO, what happens to the Automatic Update Client on the machine?  Does it revert back to the Microsoft update site for updates at 3:00 AM or whatever the default is?

  • If you remove the GPO and the ConfigMgr client is on the machine, everything will be fine...

The problem is when you remove the GPO and the ConfigMgr client is not on the machine, it will revert back to the default settings of installing everything from Microsoft Update.  This comes in to play when upgrading the client from ConfigMgr 2007 to 2012, since the old client gets uninstalled before the new client starts up and begins managing the WU settings.

Keep you GPO in place while doing client deployment/upgrades.
