SPMT fails to start when using AD FS authentication for MS365 RRS feed

  • We are having trouble authenticating when starting SPMT. Our environment uses AD FS for authentication to MS365. There is no trouble logging in to, using Outlook, etc. When starting SPMT it brings up the standard MS365 login dialog, we enter our user ID, we get the redirection to AD FS message, and then the windows close and nothing happens.

    Since this is the first step in using the tool, we aren't getting very far. The online documentation doesn't mention AD FS that I can see, and there is nothing in  troubleshooting about this problem. There is a list of error messages, but no mention of where to find any logs. Didn't see anything in event viewer.

    Any ideas on how to find and fix the problem?

  • After noticing a problem with OneDrive authentication, I was able to discover that at least one of our internal AD FS servers didn't have the corrent registry entries for the SCHANNEL TLS protocols. After correcting the registry entries (using  the IIS Crypt tool)  and rebooting the server, it is now possible to authenticate and start the SPMT.
