    Is it possible to have the same function for Windows XP platform?

    or some way to do the same thing in XP platform.

  • SmartDrive was a disk-caching program under DOS that improved hard disk I/O.  This is not needed in Windows, and nor is it supported.

  • Dear Bigteddy,

    The Smartdrv.exe allowed me create a virtual drive, say "drive E" in memory and let me create a file in the Edrive with  functions like

            stream=fopen('E:\\ABC.DAT",wb); fwrite(stream,...); fclose(stream);

    In this way I could read and write to this file as I do with an ordinary file in hard drive; but because this file is in a  E-drive which is in a memory I can access the file much faster than I would have with a file in hard drive ie: Cdrive.

    You say in windows we don't need smartdrv.exe. Is there a way to do above process with windowsXP service3 ?

    Thank you, Bigteddy,

  • I think you are talking about the old RAMDRIVE.SYS.  See the following reference:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/142546

    This is not supported natively in Windows XP, although you can get 3rd party products that will do this for you.

    For example:

    http://www.onlinehowto.net/how-to-install-ram-drive-in-windows-xp/828

    http://www.mydigitallife.info/free-ramdisk-for-windows-vista-xp-2000-and-2003-server/

    Please note that I haven't tried these utilities, and do not vouch for them in any way.  I am giving the links simply as examples of third-party products that will provide the functionality you are looking for.

  • I use RAMDisk with Windows 7 on my netbook: http://memory.dataram.com/products-and-services/software/ramdisk

    It also runs on XP and there is a FREE version for personal use.
