Power Query and SQL Server RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am new to the use of Power Query and I am trying to find out if Power Query in excel,  against SQL databases, can cause data loss or performance issues for the SQL server by using it?

  • Power Query on its own cannot cause data loss on the SQL Server directly. The SQL statements generated by Power Query will only read data, not modify it. However, it's also possible to run arbitrary user-provided SQL queries through Power Query -- including INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE commands. The best way to protect against ignorant or malicious users is, of course, to ensure that their permissions on the SQL Server do not allow them to modify data.

Any tool which allows execution of queries against a database server can, in principle, cause performance issues. From that perspective, Power Query is no different than (say) running a report via Reporting Services.
