  • Question

  • Hi Team,

There was a request to create some A, CNAME and SRV records under my DNS for which the domain was abc.com

In order to complete the request I created a new zone as abc.com and created A, CNAME and SRV records under the new zone. There is a internet website already existed with www.abc.com (abc is company name). As soon as I created new zones in my Internal MS DNS servers users reported that they were not able to open Internet website www.abc.com.

As per the nslookup output from user machine, the website was not resolving to IP address. That's why they were not be able to open open  websites using hostname. As soon as I removed the recently created zones, They were able to resolve the website name to IP address and surf the websites.

I have forwarders and root hints setup on my Internal DNS server for Internet queries. Could anyone please suggest the alternate approach to create the new DNS entries under abc.com in my internal DNS server without impacting the public hosted website abc.com

  • You could either set up the public DNS records internally in your DNS servers (eg. create a record for www.abc.com)

Or you could create a zone for each of the internal services you require like this:

rather than a zone for abc.com, create new zones for internalservice1.abc.com, internalservice2.abc.com etc... where internalservice1.abc.com is whatever you need to resolve internally

In these zones you can create the records you need without having to add all your public records internally

  • Thanks for the reply. Really Appreciate it.

    1. How to set up the DNS records internally for www.abc.com where abc.com is hosted in Internet cloud

Lets take www.microsoft.com as an example

    2. Can you assist how will it be possible for me to go for option 2 for the below DNS entry.

    sip.abc.com should resolve to 10.0.0.1

    Again Thanks in advance.

  • Create a new zone for the record you need, so if you want to add the record sip.abc.com, create a zone for sip.abc.com and in that zone create an A record for "same as parent zone" with the value 10.0.0.1 then any requests not defined like this for Abc.com will go to the Internet.

  • Thanks for reply. Seems we are reaching towards a solution. If I understood you correctly the zone name should be sip.abc.com instead of abc.com ? My actual includes CNAME and SRV records also and listed as below. Can I complete the CNAME and SRV records also using the proposed solution without impacting the users who use access www.abc.com

Record Type Domain        DNS Record name                                                     Resolves to
    SRV      abc.com           _sipinternaltls._tcp.abc.com (priority=10 weight=0 port=5061)     XYZ.com
    SRV      abc.com     _sipinternaltls._tcp.abc.com (priority=20 weight=0 port=5061)     XYZ.com
    A      abc.com     sip.abc.com                                                                                     10.0.0.1
    CNAME    abc.com      lyncdiscoverinternal.abc.com                                                           XYZ.com

    Many Thanks for your assistance.

  • The A and CNAME records yes, for your Lync/Skype SRV records, set them up in public DNS

  • Team, I have a good news for A record which is working fine. Thanks.

Next I tried to create above mentioned CNAME in same sip.abc.com which is now reflecting to lyncdiscoverinternal.sip.abc.com instead of lyncdiscoverinternal.abc.com

Could you please assist in this second step as there is no option to change the FQDN (sip.abc.com) while creating the CNAME.

  • Apologies,

I was off for a few days, I'm trying to understand your CNAME, is it for lyncdiscover.abc.com and pointing to an internal A record?

  • Thanks for the reply.

Requirement is to point create a CNAME for record name lyncdiscoverinternal.abc.com and resolving to XYZ.com

Issue is that I am not allowed to create anyzone with name as abc.com. I am able to create the A record using the below solution provided by your team.

"Create a new zone for the record you need, so if you want to add the record sip.abc.com, create a zone for sip.abc.com and in that zone create an A record for "same as parent zone" with the value 10.0.0.1 then any requests not defined like this for Abc.com will go to the Internet. "

I hope I am clear to you. Kindly let me know If I can explain you further.
