  • SAM is NEVER a tool alone!

There are numerous vendors and products which do software inventory, they all have different Pros and Cons.

Your choice of tool(s) will have to reflect your current and future infrastructure as well as your heritage of software vendors - matched with your competency and/or willingness to invest time and/or money into your SAM work. You should be very aware of some inventory tools' shortcomings with Cloud/Mac/Linux/Unix/virtualization infrastructure.

The Silver Bullet solution would be utopia, but you would have to evaluate technical solutions and implementation cost/ROI for HP-Tools (AM/DDMi/uCMDB/UD etc.) + Microsoft System Center (SCCM) + SYMC Altiris + Snow Software + Flexera FlexNet (former ManageSoft) + HEAT LANrev (former Absolute Manage) + LanSweeper + BMC PATROL + Dell KACE+++
Ask your systems management guy(s) if he(they) have implemented any of the above - or any similar. And DO hear out their experiences with agents implementations!

If you want a snapshot of your current Microsoft environment - try MAP Toolkit with as deep credentials as you'll get hold of.

If you and your organization lacks experience with SAM, I definitely would contact one of the certified ones in your market - they will lead and advice you further.

Best of luck in your strive for wholehearted Software Asset Management! Don't trust only a tool...
