Backup Issue

    Question

  • If we have 10 folders in D Drive with 1 file in each folder. I started backup, how many shadow copies will be created, 1 or 10 and where this shadow copy will be stored?

Let's say, we are using Windows Backup.

  • Hi,

Windows Server Backup stores backup versions in volume shadow copies. After the data write is complete(it means server backup complete), Windows Server Backup creates a shadow copy of the volume where the backup is stored using Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).

    > how many shadow copies will be created
One backup operation corresponding to one shadow copy. So, it depends on your backup operation numbers.

    >where this shadow copy will be stored
Same location as you stored the backup files. Windows Server Backup stores backups at the following path: <BackupStorageLocation>WindowsImageBackup<ComputerName>

You may check blog “Backup Version and Space Management in Windows Server Backup” for more information about Windows Server Backup and Shadow Copy:
