Failing to Delete/Remove Project Server Service Application, giving error "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have installed Project Server 2013 on SharePoint 2013, and installed the first PWA which worked. But I needed to change some configurations and so I deleted the PWA instances, but now I cannot delete the Project Server Service Application. Every attempt to delete the Service Application it gives the error above, namely:

    Sorry, something went wrong

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

    Technical Details

    Correlation ID: ecaeaf9c-9fec-3049-ba23-d9a18337b9e2

Date and Time: 8/18/2014 12:55:31 PM

    I'd urgently appreciate help.

  • Hello,

Did the PWA instance delete successfully? Might be worth checking with PowerShell: http://epmsource.com/2011/05/31/common-errors-when-a-pwa-site-is-deleted-incorrectly/

Also check the SharePoint farm ULS logs for more details on the error.

  • Thanks Paul. I've done everything to ensure that the PWA instances were completely deleted. Following the commands on the link you provided gave the screenshot below:

Which shows that it's not even picking up the Project Server Application Service, but I've now now got 3 of the application services because I tried to see if I could create another one! :-) But the strange thing is they are all not appearing in this command execution.

Further execution of commands shows that there are no PWA instances still remaining:

(This is just for one of the Project Service Applications indicated above).

Yet trying to delete it gives the error without relent.

Help! As long as this situation stands, I cannot add a Project Service Application, hence cannot create any PWA instance nd can never get Project Server to run again. Uninstalling SharePoint to install afresh is NOT an option as I have hoards of data on it, and users are actively working on it.

    Thanks in advance.

  • What do you see in the SharePoint ULS logs? Paul

  • Hi I've already seen that thread, tried everything, and it didn't work. I still can't delete the Project Service Applications. The commands show that there are no site collections and the Project Service Application is disabled as shown above.

    Still looking for help!

  • Try running the SharePoint Products Configuration Wizard.  Often that cleans up some lingering issues with SharePoint.  After it complete, then try deleting service.

    Cheers

  • Hi Michael. Thanks for the tip. I've done that already before and it didn't solve the issue, but let me do it again.
