  • Question

  • hey there, please bear with me as i attempt to give all the details pertinent to this query, as I am not super computer- savvy. Let me know if additional info is needed.

Operating System: Windows 7 home premuim 64-bit

System: (brand new) Dell Inspiron 17R (Inspiron N7010)

    Processor: Intel Core i5 CPU    M 460 @253GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.5GHz

    Direct X Version 11

This error message pops up while playing the Sims 3, usually while on large lots, sometimes after hours of playing and sometimes after only a few minutes. I've tried running the game in window mode, which did not help the problem, but allowed me to see the error message.

Windows help and support offers the following suggestion: open screen resolution- click advanced settings- click troubleshoot tab- click change settings- move hardware accelerator slider to full, however when I go to advanced settings, the change settings is not clickable. it says "if your current display driver allows you to change settings, click this button" but it's not clickable for me, so how would I change hardware acceleration? Intel site says there are no updates for my driver.

any idea how to fix this? My "Intel graphics and Media control panel" is set to "maximum performance" under "power plans." I scanned my computer at the Sims site to see if it met the requirements for playing (http://www.ea.com/games/the-sims-3# ) and it said my computer exceeds the minimum requirements to play.

Please help, and let me know if additional info is needed. This is a brand-new laptop and I had high hopes for playing the Sims 3.

  • Hi,

the download page also offers ATI drivers so my guess is, that the laptop also have an ATI/AMD graphic chip. Also mentioned here: http://www.dell.com/us/p/inspiron-17r/pd#TechSpec (1024 (MB) ATI HD5470 Mobility RadeonTM )

The Intel drivers are known to be buggy in games. So look at the manual how to switch to the ATI Radeon chip.

  • Thank you for the quick reply!

would that be the first download on the page you linked to (Intel Graphics Driver for Windows 7 and vista), or the third (Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Driver for windows 7 and vista)? Or both? I'm sorry for being such a dunce, downloading the driver now.

Edit: upon trying to install the driver (1st download on the page), I get the following error message: "The setup program failed to install one or more device drivers. Setup will exit."

=0( !@#$% ...any idea what i can do next?

The Intel Driver Update Utility provides the following:

    Product Deteted: Intel HD Graphics

    Current Driver Installed: 8.15.10.2104

A customized computer manufacturer driver is installed on your computer. The Intel Driver Update Utility is not able to update the driver. Installing a generic Intel driver instead of the customized computer manufacturer driver may cause technical issues. Contact your computer manufacturer for the latest driver for your computer.

looks like i'm SOL for new drivers..?

  • I'm sorry to hear that, but at least i'm not alone with this problem! ugh, i've been a sims fan since the first incarnation of the game, and was so excited for the sims 3 and can't even enjoy playing :( i'll probably wind up getting a new graphics card, but it's such b.s.! this laptop is supposed to be really good, and it can't even handle a game that came out 3 freaking years ago? THANKS INTEL

  • the cause are the bad Intel drivers.

    @ lbear121

have you tried if you can switch to the AMD/ATI chip?
