    Suddenly, when I go to use the search at the start menu, it cannot find any of my files! I've rebooted but that didn't change anything. What happened... and what can I do to restore the indexing. If I didn't have google desktop, I would have been lost!

    Uninstall google desktop and reboot. Does the search return? Why would you need Google desktop search anyway? Are you running Google 7?

    Perform a system restore to a point in time prior to the problem.
