WSUS Server (SCCM 2012 Environment) RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello All,

I am new to ConfigMgr 2012.  Let me give you home lab layout that, I am working/learning to understand ConfigMgr 2012 concept.

    DC - Server 2012

CAS - Server 2012 (Central Administration Site - Running SQL 2012 as database)

PRI - Server 2012 (Primary Site - Running SQL 2012 as database)

    WSUS - Server 2008 R2 (Clean Install)

When, I installed CAS & PRI, I did not install WSUS role.  Both CAS & PRI site hierarchy are working fine.  Completed initial configuration such as discovery, boundary, custom device and client settings, distribution point and pxe point.  Now, I want to add site system role (SUP - Software Update Point).

My question is should, I use WSUS server that is currently running on Server 2008 R2 or install WSUS role on CAS and use its internal SQL 2012 as the database for WSUS.  Let me know.

    Thanks

    Ram

  • Jorgen - I am using SCCM 2012 SP1 Beta.  I wanted SUP to work with WSUS so that SEP will function properly.  If, I can't find a proper solution then, I will go with Server 2008 R2.

  • Typically organizations with fewer than 100,000 clients will not install a CAS at all.

If you are going to do multiple sites with a CAS, then the central administration site and all child primary sites must have a software update point where you will deploy software updates.  You can throw another DB instance on the SQL you are using for these sites for your lab and most small-medium production environments.

Read this article for all the info you need about Software Update Point planning:

    I hope that helps!

  • Thanks Nash.  My intention of installing CAS & PRI was to know all the configurations involved. Since this is lab why not.

When, I add site system role (SUP) on Server 2008 R2 - during the configuration, I don't see the option (Active Settings) to use THIS SERVER AS THE ACTIVE SOFTWARE UPDATE POINT.  What am, I doing wrong.

Where can, I find WSUS administration console download link to install on CAS & PRI for Server 2012. I am able to find WSUS administration console for Server 2008 R2.  This WSUS is killing me. Can't find a solution to proceed with the lab.

  • Hi,

Neihter Server 2012 or SQL Server 2012 is supported until the release of Sp1. Are you using the beta of Sp1 in your Environment?

Otherwise I would recommend that you use ConfigMgr 2012 sp1 beta or reinstall your Environment with Windows Server 2008 r2.

    Regards,
    Jörgen
