"Power Saver" profile won't turn off Aero transparency RRS feed

  • Question

  • As the title states, windows7 Professional won't turn off aero transparency when power saver profile is activated. I'm using a netbook (Gateway LT3103) that has a 1.2Ghz Athlon and an ATI x1270 graphics. I've tried both the windows update drivers and the drivers from the ATI site. No difference.
What should I do? Are there any registry entries that can be modified?

  • Hi guys,
i found a solution, i tried 4 times on my laptop and it works.
This annoyance happens when you chance theme when you are in power saver plan.
Let's see how to fix it.

1 .Be sure you don't have an unsaved theme in the personalization window. In that case delete it.
    2. Save your theme if you didn't do yet.
    3. Switch to balanced power plan if you are using another plan.
    4. Select Windows 7 and switch back to your theme then. Keep power options and personalization windows open.
    5. Now change power plan to power saver
    6. In personalization window -> window color and and disable trasparency. Click save changes. You can see that an unsaved theme has just been created and activated.
    7. Select balanced power plan.
    8. Activate your theme, delete the unsaved theme and close personalization window.

Now you can switch between power plans, and when you activate saver power plan trasparency will be turned off. Does it work?
I checked all the steps on my computer while i was writing these instructions, so it must work to you too!

    There are just 2 bugs:
    1. if you move to power saver plan, then back to balanced or high performance, and open personalization window, everything is allright, but if you open this window when you are in power saver plan, you will have a new unsaved theme activated. To delete it without doing mistakes, switch to balanced power plan, activate your theme and delete the unsaved one. So the only way to don't have this unwanted unsaved theme is to open theme window when you are in a plan which is not power saver.

    2. If you are in power saver and change theme you will have to do all the steps to make trasparency working fine again, so if you would change theme move to another power plan before doing.

They are two silly bugs which microsoft should fix, but i wont bet...

    That's all. Hope it worked.
    Bye

  • Hi,

Please understand that Windows Basic and Aero are different themes. The power related feature may have not this kind of function to switch between different themes.

As I know, to save power, when the laptop is not plugged with the AC adapter or the battery is low, some functions will be disabled temporarily to help the computer work longer. To test this, please restore the power plan to default and then just unplug the AC adapter and see how it works.

    Restore power plan

    ============

    1.     Please go to “Control Panel – Power Options” and click the link “Change plan settings” link of your current power plan.

    2.     On “Edit Plan Settings”, click “Restore default settings for this plan” and then click “Yes”.

    3.     Go to “change advanced power settings”.

    4.     On the “Advanced settings” window, click “change settings that are currently unavailable” if it exists. Then click “Restore plan defaults” and click “Yes”. Then Click “OK” to save the settings and close this window.

    5.     After the steps above, the Power Options are reset to default.

    Thanks.

Your solution worked for me! It seems that this broken behavior only occurred after a bluescreen (I resumed from hibernate after messing around with several bluetooth mice several minutes earlier, maybe freaked the computer out). When going into power-saver mode, the removal of transparency defaults to white rather than the shade of the current theme. Then again, this is clearly a bug, and you are the only person who has so far found some kind of stop-gap solution. I'm going to try to reinstall my GPU drivers and maybe check out the event log to see if I can narrow down what stopped working!
    Excessive use of hardware.

  • You might have to turn it off manually from the "right click desktop, then personalize" menu, otherwize if your interested you could try AMD's Fusion Utility for Gaming, this handy application shuts down all "unnecessary" background applications including Aero, therefore in Desktops giving you more performance and in notebooks/netbooks giving you more battery life...

You can download it here: http://www2.ati.com/misc/fusion/AMDFusion.exe

    Hope this helps,

  • Hi
it depends on the manufacturers of Notebook, and it also depends on your notebook performance and battery performance, if that performance meets the requirements for your OS then no need to turnoff transparency,
If you want to turn it off go to power options select power saver and click on advanced power settings and change the settings.

  • I have this same problem. by default windows 7 disables aero transparency when power saver profile is active. this started happening to me while i was in power saver mode, went into personalization options and noticed an unsaved theme that was currently active. i deleted this theme and from then on always have transparency on power saver profile. now, when running on battery in power saver mode and want to squeeze some extra time out i have  to manually turn off aero transparency. i still have not found a fix to this problem and would appreciate any help on this issue.

Try going into the power settings for "Power saver" and clicking "Restore default settings for this plan".

    Worked for me

Thanks Skynet3D, works like a charm.

But this one didn't work, sorry Nicholas Li.

    Hi,

    Restore power plan

    ============

    Thanks.
