Mapping SharePoint Folders onto Windows Explorer Drives RRS feed

  • Question

  • So I shared Windows Explorer Folders with Windows Drive and it works.

BUT everyday I need to go in (old) IE on a SharePoint Folder and click view in explorer in order to re-establish connection to the SharePoint.

Is there some way to keep this permanent?

  • Hi Evan Camilleri,

    There are two methods:

    1. Mapping a library as a network drive, this is supported only through Internet Explorer. If you use this method, you may meet some error, you can read below article:

    https://support.office.com/en-us/article/troubleshoot-mapped-network-drives-that-connect-to-sharepoint-online-ef399c67-4578-4c3a-adbe-0b489084eabe?ui=en-US&rs=en-US&ad=US

    2. Sync SharePoint files with the new OneDrive sync client.

I would suggest you to use the second method, using the OneDrive. Consider that since the launch of Office 365, mapping a Document Library as a network drive has become obsolete, because OneDrive syncs files from SharePoint to Windows perfectly.

    Best regards,

    Allen Bai

  • Sync is not a solution - I cannot have all the files on my laptop

  • Hi Evan Camilleri,

If you choose to map a drive instead of using the new OneDrive sync client, follow the steps below in Internet Explorer(note: must do this in IE):

    1. Sign in to your SharePoint Online site by using your Office 365 work or school account credentials. Make sure that you select the Stay signed in option.

    2. Browse to the library(folder) that you want to map the drive for.

    3. In the ribbon, click Open with Explorer. This option is not available in Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome or Firefox.

    4. After a new window is opened, copy the URL of the library.

    5. Right-click Computer or This PC from the Desktop, and then click Map Network Drive.

    6. Click the Connect to a Web site that you can store your documents and pictures link, and then click Next two times.

    7. Paste the URL that you copied in step 4, click Next, and then follow the instructions in the wizard.

    Best regards,

    Allen Bai

  • Hi Evan,

You can add your site into the trusted site list of IE and also select the "Automatic logon with current user name and password" option under User Authentication section in the Trusted Sites Security Settings.

    Best regards,
