DPMBackup -replicas error 0x80070057 since DPM 2012 R2 UR3 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Since installing Update Rollup 3 running dpmbackup -replicas fails for each replica due to error 0x80070057.

    DPMBackupLogCurr.errlog shows the following:

I assume something is wrong with the VSS Writer "DPM Writer" which is missing from VSSADMIN LIST PROVIDERS

Are those VSS Null Providers supposed to look like that?

    Any help would be appreciated!

    Kind regards,

  • Hi,

Thanks for reporting this - I will try to duplicate and get back to you.

Update: I was able to reproduce the problem and is currently under investigation.  It does not appear to be related to the new NULL provider introduced in UR3.

  • Thank you Mike,

I will wait for further feedback.

    On a sidenote:

I still think it could be related to the introduction of those NULL providers: If I remember correctly - pre UR3 - "vssadmin list providers" showed the DPM writer (GUID {0074A271-4F24-43E0-9EC7-28A44189CB80} ) as a registered VSS provider. Now this one fails when using dpmbackup as stated in the errorlog (probably because it doesn't exist anymore). Maybe I am missing an updated binary of dpmbackup which uses those NULL providers instead?

  • Hi,

We have root cause this issue and it seems DPMBackup.exe was not updated to use a new ExposeSnapshot() API that is required in UR3.  We are working on fixing the dpmbackup.exe utility to correct the problem.  No ETA at this time, but we are working on it.
