Drill to Detail Error RRS feed

  • Question

  • When creating a page, we select multiple members in hiearchy in the background (not a slicer) and then try to drill to detail and receive an error that multiple members are selected.

    Error

"This function is not available because there are multiple selections on the "Reason for Extension" dimension, which is in the background. Please choose a single member on the Reason for Extension dimension and try again."

We are looking to only show the data for the members we select and do not necessarily need them placed in the page itself to view as a row or column. Reason being why we want it in the background but not sliced.

Also on a side note: We did notice that the hierarchy has a member that is listed as "item" and the programmer indicated these are the blank fields. If he was to remove these would it only affect that specific hierarchy or would it remove all those records for the entire cube. Thus not having that data reporting out in other pages.

    Any thoughts?

When you "Combine" members on the background instead of slicing, then you cannot do a drill to detail.  Combining creates an on-the-fly calc member to combine the background items.  We cannot drill to detail using a calc member.  At this time, SSAS has no way to determine what members are in the calc member and how to then calculate the drill to detail operation.  Have you tried moving the members to the foreground and drilling to detail?

  • Hi Joey,

Yes we have moved the members but we were not looking to have them in the foreground. It looks like we will have to for now. Thank you for your reply we figured it was something would could not do but perhaps thought we were missing something.
