Unknown Ethernet Controller (cannot install drivers) RRS feed

  • Question

  • After having the recurring "windows explorer has stopped working" error and having found no solution I decided to reinstall from scratch using a cable to back up the hard-drives via USB to a second computer. Having now reinstalled XP fresh with all the files copied back over I am having the problem described in the title. I cannot find the manufacturer of the controller as the device manager gives absolutely no information (all fields are marked 'unknown'). We do not have a CD with any drivers on to install from although the start-up screen had GeForce 7050m-m followed by the date so I installed those drivers (http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Downloads/Downloads_Driver_Detail.aspx?MenuID=61&LanID=0&detailid=865) which work for everything except the ethernet controller.

Is there a way of finding out what make/model the controller is?

    Thank you.

  • Sorry! I've made a mistake or two here, for some reason I wrote XP in my post but I did mean Vista (for a few minutes I was trying to work out how I had managed to post in the wrong forum). I've searched around that site for the Vista drivers and I think I have now found the correct ones (http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/win7-winvista-64bit-270.61-whql-driver-uk.html), it is a 64bit machine so hopefully these will work, will test them tonight too see if they're working.
