replaceing distribution point using old name RRS feed

  • Question

  • we have to keep the server names the same for our remote site servers.  The reason is irrelevant.

we have done this before.  Problem is getting SCCM to respond to recognizing new server with same name.

we delete DP role and remove site system.  then delete system from sccm.  the problem comes when we add the replacement server is getting SCCM to recognized as a DP.  it can take days before it days.

there must be away to expedite record removals from database in order to replace the server.  clients have no problems but making a client a DP is where our issues lie.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Restarting the site system status thread should help as well as of course making sure DNS is updated properly.

Honestly and bluntly though, what a stupid requirement. It's a simple name of a device that makes no difference whatsoever and it's causing you pain. Stated another way, a completely arbitrary requirement that provides no actual benefit is causing problems for you. That is truly the stuff of Dilbert.

  • That's what group policy preferences is for.

Also, your DPs double as print servers? That's just asking for problems.
