What version of Forefront should I install for Windows Server 2008 R2 also running SharePoint 2010? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

I current have a Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise addition running SharePoint 2010 server in a test environment. All the software is installed on one box.

What I would like to know is what Forefront software should I use to secure Windows Server 2008 R2? I know I should install “Forefront for SharePoint” to secure SharePoint 2010, but I’m not sure what version of Forefront I should install for Windows Server 2008 R2. Forefront TMG and ISA Server, Forefront Management Consoles, Forefront Client Security, Forefront Edge Security, Forefront Endpoint Protection, or Forefront Client Security. I also want to know in what order I should install the Forefront software (“Forefront for SharePoint” before Forefront for Windows Server 2008 R2 or visor versa), and if there are any issue with installing both software on one server.

I hope you can help, many thanks,
    CEStar

  • Hi CEStar,

"Is it OK to install both Forefront applications on one server. " - yes, you can install both FEP and FPS on the same server.

  • Hi,

    Thank you for the post.

To protect SharePoint 2010, you should use Forefront Protection 2010 for SharePoint. Before installing that, you may read this requirement: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/forefront-protection-for-sharepoint-requirements.aspx

  • Hi Nick

Do you also know what version of Forefront protects the Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise Server that SharePoint is installed on. Forefront Protection 2010 for SharePoint only protects files and folders within the SharePoint enviroment, but not the Windows Server 2008 R2 enviroment.

    Many thanks

  • Hi Nick,

One final question: Is it OK to install both Forefront applications on one server. Will there be any conflictions or issues?
    1) Forefront Endpoint Protection 2010 Client - to protect Windows Server 2008 R2 Server environment
    2) Forefront Protection 2010 for SharePoint - to protect the SharePoint 2010 Server environment.

    Many thanks
