  • Which application(s) are giving you problems?
What happens when you try to start one of the applications?
Which edition have you installed? Home & Business edition or the Professional Plus edition?

Have you tried holding down the Ctrl key when starting the application(s) to enter "Safe Mode"?

  • Only Outlook 2010 is giving me this problem, the other applications open without any problem. When I try to start the application  the cirle spins for  a few seconds and then disappears. I am not sure which edition I installed, it just says Office 2010 beta. I have not tried to start in the safe mode.

Try safe mode.  Hold Ctrl as you click on the Outlook icon to start outlook.  Does it start up ok?

  • To create a new profile you need to go into the Control Pannel, and double clikc on the Mail icon, and then click on Show Profiles (, or you may just have the option to create Add a new profile)  Then Click on  Add.  Just create a new name and then close and then reboot your system, and then try loginging into Outlook.  It's also that you did a "clean" install when you first installed Outlook.  If you did not do a "clean" install then I would first un-install all verions of Office then reboot, install a "clean" Office 2010, then reboot, and you should be good to go.

  • I am having the exact same problem and I had a clean installation of MS Office Pro 2010 on a new PC with Windows 7 Home 64 bit.  This is really a stupid problem and Microsoft needs to fix this!  We shouldn't have to have to reboot a computer just to get MS Outlook to work.  This is ridiculous.  A newer version should be better, not worse!  I should have gotten a Mac!

  • I am having the same issue.  Mine also seems to keep throwing a template issue (Normal template).  I have 7-64bit with 2010 64 bit.  It will open only if I open it in safe mode and then open the document.

  • Try searching for your Normal.dotm and renaming it to BADNormal.dotm and then starting Word. Word will create a new Normal.dotm which should get over any corruption in that template.

Also, consider changing to the 32-bit version of Office. You only need the 64-bit version if you need to work on very large Excel workbooks. (>2GB in size) For most people the 32-bit version is recommended because it has fewer compatibility problems with Add-Ins.

  • If Outlook is the problem, it's emailtemplate.dotm, not normal.dotm. Both templates are at
    %appdata%\Microsoft\Templates

  • Thank you for the help.  I ended up deleting every folder that I thought might even remotely be part of Office and that seems to have fixed it.  I tried deleting the entire template folder prior to all of this and it still came back.

    THank you for your help
