Cannot connect to shared folders on a Server 2008 r2 machine from Win 8 and Win 10

Question
-
Hi, I have a multiple windows version environment with mostly Win 7 and Win 8 and now also 2 Win 10 machines, which ultimately they will have to be updated to Win 10. I also have a server running Server 2008 r2 and a QNAP NAS. The server is main just a file server. It also runs some backup programs daily.
The machines with Win 7 are all fine connecting to the shared folders. Those with Win 8 can connect to them half of the time and if not they require reboots. I have just updated two of the Win 7 machines to Win 10 to test it out and now I cannot connect to the shared folders at all. I can see the server in network discovery I can also remote desktop to it. I have tried "Disabling Secure Negotiate on the client" and disabling 128bit encryption but with no success. I have been searching the web but with no other useful results (at least my poor server and windows knowledge is not enough to understand).
Would anyone here please help me with the situation?
Best regards!

Hi Ngaugen,
We could configure rules on firewall to open ports for the traffic.
The following ports are associated with file sharing and server message block (SMB) communications:- Microsoft file sharing SMB: User Datagram Protocol (UDP) ports from 135 through 139 and Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) ports from 135 through 139.
- Direct-hosted SMB traffic without a network basic input/output system (NetBIOS): port 445 (TCP and UPD).

Leo

Hi Bin4ryDigit,
Thanks very much for the reply, however it doesn't seem to be the same cause as mine. I believe it has more to do with the Server rather than the client. I followed your linked instructions and that didn't work. I think my problem is more associated with the server not responding to Win 8 and Win 10 client (That roughly the error message I get). I actually tried disabling SMB but that made my sever not accessible altogether even from a Win 7 client. I just wonder if there is a guide to set the shares in Server 2008 "properly"? I only use it as a file sever here and run a daily backup job with FreeFileSync and Rsync so I really hope I won't have to upgrade to a more recent server version just because of the file sharing problem which should not even exist in the first place.
Thanks!

Hi Ngaugen,
On Windows 10 client, use IP address to connect to the shared folders directly. Is it successful?
When connecting, what error message have you got? It could help to analyze the problem.
Besides, are the clients joined domain?
Best Regards,
Leo

Hi Leo,
Thanks for the reply. I have already tried connecting with IP but with no success. The error message I got is very standard: file and print sharing resource is online but isn't responding to connection attempts. The remote computer isn’t responding to connections on port 445, possibly due to firewall or security policy settings, or because it might be temporarily unavailable. Windows couldn’t find any problems with the firewall on your computer."
I have checked these settings and they should be all fine.
I have just checked the domain settings. On the server, it has a domain controller called: server2008.local, I believe none of my pc are set to that same domain. And therefore I have just tried with one Win 8 and one Win 10 PC, the Win 8 workstation could not be joined to the Active Directory domain while the Win 10 workstation has that domain option greyed out. To be honest I am really inexperience with Windows Server and what I need the Server to do is very simple: to share and backup files (shadow copy and FreeFileSync to other NASs) Should I just demote the Domain Controller on the Server? I will do my research on it ASAP as I am a little busy currently. Could this be the cause of all problems?
Thanks!

Hello,
lets check some basic settings, please post an unedited ipconfig /all from the DC/DNS server, a Windows 7 machine that works fine and a problem machine.

Hi Ngaugen,
Disable the firewalls on server and clients temporarily.
Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP on Win8 and Win10 clients. Open Properties of NIC, double click IPv4. Click Advanced and choose WINS tab. Then enable it.

Hi Leo,
Thanks for the reply. I actually tried enabling NetBIOS before but it didn't work and I have just disabled firewalls on both Server2008 R2 and Win 10 and that worked! However I am not sure if disabling Windows firewall will cause any security issue. Is there a way that I can still use the firewall while allowing my Win PC to connect to the server?
Thanks!

It seems the server firewall was blocking file access from win 8 and win 10 machines. Is there any settings I can change just to get that working? Thanks.Monday, August 10, 2015 5:36 AM

Hi Ngaugen,
We could configure rules on firewall to open ports for the traffic.
Best Regards,
Leo

Dear Leo,
Thanks, I just checked the In bound rules and I found something strange happened that's the SMB-In rules were set to block for no reason after updating from server 2008 to r2 last time. Now everything is working fine again!
Cheers!
