Reinstalling a machine that has been downgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 7. RRS feed

  • Question

  • First off a little background.  In the past we have ordered machines from OEMs that had Win7 pro preinstalled.  We would install our standard image, renter the key from the COA, and activate.  It is time for many our our machines to be replaced and we have demoed several model from different OEMs.  All of these machine are Windows 7 Pro downgraded from Windows 8 pro.  There is no COA key just a Win 8 sticker.  If we reimage these machines how do we activate them?

that should give you the answer, probably not what you're wanting to hear however

    "Hi,

Your ability to downgrade Windows 8 to an earlier version of Windows depends both on the version of Windows 8 that you have and on the method by which you obtained Windows 8.

Here is the detailed information for your reference:

How to downgrade from Windows 8

For your second question, I am afraid to say that we cannot used Windows 8 license key to activate Windows 7 operation system.

    Thanks for your understanding."

  • The machine will come from the OEM with Windows 7.  No one at this company will be performing a downgrade.

So if we buy these machines in order to use them the way they need to be we will have buy a 2nd Windows 7pro license?  That doesn't seem right.  Part of the purchase price of the machine is for the OS licensing.  The OS that will be on the machine when we buy them will be Windows 7.

  • You might be able to pull the license key from the machine using some tool.  MDT is unrelated to this issue though.

  • Thanks Ty.  Perhaps this is not the correct section.   I just assumed that since we use MDT and see this potential issue that the experts might know the solution.
