Unable to extract through Exmerge from recovery storage group RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have a user who existed in Ex2003, Ex2007 and now in ExOnline.

While restoring from legacy tapes on Ex2003 i'm facing difficulties in Exmerge tool. Below is error message

Error opening message store (MSEMS). Verify that the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service is running and that you have the correct permissions to log on. (0x8004011d)

I read few blogs stating admin account should not have sendAs and receiveAs deny checked. However I'm unable to uncheck as those options are greyed out.

    Help is much appreciated.

  • Another approach to reach the database content with proper permissions is to create a new account and give it access to all mailboxes:

Create a normal account, do not add it to any administrative groups.
Give the account Full Control to the mailbox store:
From Exchange System Manager right-click the relavant mailbox store, choose properties and the Security tab.
Add the new user and give it Full Control to the database, ensure that Send As and Receive As are ticked, under Allow.

  • Hi,

Depend your post, I understand that run Exmerge to export mailbox to .pst file in Exchange 2003 with error “Error opening message store (MSEMS). Verify that the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service is running and that you have the correct permissions to log on. (0x8004011d)”.
If I misunderstand your concern, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Here’s an article about this error, for your reference: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/322312
In addition, please confirm below point before troubleshooting this question:
    1. The Information Store Service is running and the relevance mailbox store is mounted.
    2. If extracting to/importing from a mailbox in the Recovery Storage group ensure the mailbox has not been moved.
    3. Mailboxes must already exist.
    4. Mailboxes' user accounts must be enabled and exist in the Global Address List.

By default, the Enterprise Admins and Domain Admins group have Allow and Deny rights for Send As and Receive As permissions on the Mailbox stores. These rights are required for Exmerge to function.

    Thanks

  • Hi Kaushik Das16,

It's other way around - the restore admin should have SendAs and ReceiveAs. The problem might reside in insufficient or not fully applied such permissions. Check the procedure:

To troubleshoot this issue, follow these steps:
        • Verify that the user account under which you run the Exchange Mailbox Merge program has the Receive As and Send As security permissions set to Allow for the Mailbox Store. To do this, follow these steps:
          1. Start Exchange System Manager. To do this, click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Exchange, and then click System Manager.
          2. Expand Servers, expand the server that you want, expand the storage group that you want (for example, expand First Storage Group), and then expand Mailbox Store.
          3. Right-click Mailbox Store, and then click Properties.
          4. Click the Security tab, and then click the user account whose permissions you want to verify.
          5. In the Permissions list, click to select the Receive As check box in the Allow column, click to select the Send As check box in the Allow column, and then click OK.
          6. If the user account is a member of a group (domain administrators or enterprise administrators), this group must also have send as and receive as rights to the mailbox store.
        • Verify that the user account under which you run the Exchange Mailbox Merge program has delegation authority at the Organization level in Exchange System Manager. To do this, follow these steps:
          1. In Exchange System Manager, right-click the organization (for example, right-click First Organization (Exchange)), and then click Delegate control. The Exchange Administration Delegation Wizard starts.
          2. Click Next.
          3. If the user account under which you run the Exchange Mailbox Merge program is not listed in the Users and groups box, and if it does not have the role of Exchange Full Administrator, click Next, add this user account with the role of Exchange Full Administrator, and then click OK.
          4. Click Next, and then click Finish.
        • Quit Exchange System Manager.
        • Restart the Microsoft Internet Information Service (IIS) Admin Service. To do this, follow these steps.

NOTE: This restarts the Exchange Information Store service.
          1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc in the Open box, and then click OK.
          2. In the Name list, right-click IIS Admin Service, and then click Restart.
      • Click Yes to confirm the restarting of the services.
  • Quit the Services snap-in.

Reapply the permissions in an explicit manner.

There are several potential causes of this error, including:

    • Insufficient permissions on a database or mailbox to extract or insert data. Your logon account should be granted full permissions on the database, as described in Setting Permissions for Merging Data.

    • The destination database for the second step of an ExMerge operation is currently not mounted.

    • The mailbox selected for data extraction in the recovery storage group has been moved from the original database.

    • The same database has been configured in separate recovery storage groups on multiple servers.

    • The database that contains the System Attendant mailbox is disconnected. Typically, this is the first mailbox database configured on a server. It must be mounted in addition to the database(s) from which you are extracting data.
