DPM 2007 not showing Exchange Storage Groups. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

I'm having Exchange Server 2007 64 bit (CCR) on Windows Server 2008(64-bit) and DPM 2007 on Server 2008 (32-bit).  I successfully installed the DPM and the agent on the Exchange server, but when I try to add a protection group in DPM, the Exchange Storage groups are not showing under the Exchange server, only the shares and volumes can see.

*I have copied the 32-bit files of Ese.dll and eseutil.exe to the DPM server bin folder.

*I am unable to install the "Update rollup 4 for exchange" guess the reason is exchange is having SP2 installed on it.

    Appreciate a quick response :).

    Thanks.

  • Most often when a particular data source is not showing up, it is related to the writer on the protected server.  On the Exchange server, go to a command prompt and get a "vssadmin list writers".  If you don't see an Exchange writer listed, then it will not let the DPM service know that Exchange is on that box and needs to be protected.

  • As expected, there are no Exchange writers registered and thus DPM will not list Exchange as something it can protect.

A couple of things you can check are for an antivirus that is running in ESE mode (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=823166).

The other quick thing to check is the following registry key:

    “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\ParametersSystemD
isable Exchange Writer” if value is 1 writer will not be listed (if key is not
presents it defaults to 0 - Enabled)

Outside of this, the problem lies with Exchange and why it isn't registering its writer.  If these items don't allow the writer to show up, then I would post this on the Exchange forum to get some guidance from them on getting it back.  I hope this helps.

  • Hi Chris,

Under Parametersystem there is no registry entry for the Exchange Writer.

What would be the next step to follow? Please assist.

    Thanks.

  • The issue is ok now after installing Exchange management tools on the DPM server. Thanks for your support.
