incorrect redirection to mobile url RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have some refurbished laptops with Win7 and IE11. Going to our company (small county government) Sendio Ice Box (spam blocker) IE11 is wrongly redirecting the typed url to the mobile url! This renders the font so small it is unusable. Firefox is NOT doing this. We have tried all the obvious stuff like deleting history and resetting the security back to default.

Thanks for any suggestions in advance.

  • Sendio support suggested enabling the Flash plug-in. It worked. Problem solved.

  • Hi,

some websites store the screen preferences in the site cookie. Usually properly designed adaptive sites will have buttons to toggle the screen layout between desktop and mobile. see Wikipedia.org

  • It is interesting that browser's selection of the target URL between standard and mobile devices is not even discussed. How does IE11 determine it's self awareness? "Am I (IE11) hosted on a mobile device or a standard device?" Does IE11 have a setting to allow a preference option that allows the end user to "prefer" rendering of mobile URLs instead of standard URL? However, this same laptop does not select the mobile URL for a popular Taco fast food vendor site.

We purchased several of these units with fresh drive images as these were lease returns. Only 1 unit of 7 has this problem of the IE browser selecting (redirecting) the wrong target url, as this laptop is not a "mobile" device.

The easy fix is to set Firefox as the default browser. I would like to find the root cause.

  • It seems the best fix for this is for IE11 to have a switch in the URL field. This switch would manually override the self determination mode and force the browser into standard only or mobile only. It should be very intuitive for the user to find and force the rendering option. This 'missing' feature would make life easier for web developers to test their updates to their adaptive sites having mobile alternatives. The developer could easily check out both rendering options with ease.

  • We installed Chrome and it also does not have this flaw either. Only IE has this problem between the 3 top browsers.
