Mail looping from Internal to External even domain type is authoritative in accepted domain

    Question

  • Dear Team,

We are using exchange 2013 and Cisco Ironport for mail gateway.

Domain is abc.com just assume it.

Abc.com is authoritative in accepted domain.

Users restricted to send external domain excepted who are member of group (Group1) in exchange through Transport Rule.

Internal domain to External domain, Send connector configured as ( *) domain will be delivered to smart host such as Ironport.

Sender(user1@abc.com) sending mail to mail contact (user2@abc.com), mails are looping and looping between exchange to Inport ViceVersa also queue in Ironport

user1@abc.com & User2@abc.com  is doesn’t have external mail access but reaching Iron port.

In this case abc.com suffix configured as domain type is authoritative in accepted domain. How  it is looping, anyone please help out on this.

    Thanks & Regards, Kumar N

  • Hi,

Mail looping issue is not related to accepted domain.

Is User2@abc.com a Mail Contact? What's the result of the following command?

    Get-MailContact User2 | Fl *Address*

If forwarding address is configured on user mailbox?

    Get-Mailbox | Fl *forwarding*

    Best Regards,

Sure it can. It just needs an external SMTP address defined as well and that external target address is the one that cant be an authoritative domain.

Unless the external address pointed to another object that sent it back causing the loop! :)

Its really hard to see what is going here however...

  • Sorry for long delay.

User2@abc.com is mail contact is external SMTP address is same and there is no forward enabled.

My question is Accepted domain is authoritative,

    1. Recipient doesn't have mailbox with same SMTP domain suffix mail will get loop internally and dropped by default 2 days.

    2. If recipient is mailcontact with external SMTP Address will get mail loop between internal and external?

    Any help on this.

FYI, Accepted domain meaning from TechNet:

accepted domain is considered authoritative when the Exchange organization hosts mailboxes for recipients in this SMTP domain
