Required cd/dvd drive device driver is missing RRS feed

  • Question

  • I get this message trying to install Ultimate on a new hard drive I added to my puter and I do not know what to do or where to get such a drivers, I have a generic DVD and never had a problem before until now with Vista. Could some one help me; I have expended 3 days trying to figure out what to do, I am tempted to trash Vista Ultimate and get back to my XP.

    Please help, a novice here.

    Thank You

If you go into Device manager, does the drive show up under 'DVD/CD-Rom Drives'? (if it does, is there a yellow !)

If not, are there any devices listed in 'Other Drevices'?

  • Sir:

I can't go any where it is a clean first time installation, I just bought a new hard drive and the blessed Ultimate edition to install everything fresh.

If I have to go to Device Manager it means I have a windows OS installed and that is not my case. I am just starting after selecting the language and country window in the first steps of the installation then it shows the ridiculus message that it couldn't find the drivers for the CD/DVD: "Required cd/dvd drive device driver is missing"

Has not Micro$oft make a lot of money with all its wonderful software that have to create something new like this? to save a couple pennies? It is frustating and very disapointed, not all of us, at least me, are geeks, just comon hard working 'joes' trying to "ENJOY" Micro$oft new invention but so far it has been a week long of disapointments and frustation.

  • my cd and dvd drivers did the same thing his did, except mine did it for no reason. i was not installing anything, and i have been using the same operating system. when i go to the device manager, it has a yellow ! next to it. i contacted the dell people cuz that's what my computer is, and they told me to uninstall them, restart my computer, and they would work again. wrong. they still won't work. they sent me an update of the program, and it just does something with the floppy disk, it doesn't install it. what do i do?

  • This worked for me:

    Open regedit and goto

    >HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

delete the keys UPPERLIMIT and LOWERLIMIT

Unistall the drive with Device Mangler and then scan for hardware changes

  • ok, i searched my entire computer and found no such folders. i don't know what else to do. i must have a different type of computer. i have a dell, with windows xp home edition. if you can find any other way to fix them, please let me know. thank you so much for trying anyway.

  • Are you able to boot off it at all? Also, make sure that the drives are set up properly through the jumpers. Or are we talking about SATA drives?
    Tuesday, April 24, 2007 12:11 PM
  • i can boot my computer. it runs perfect. nothing else is wrong with it. i can't find any certain files that will fix my drives. i went to the troubleshoot, and it said to uninstall them, go to the add new hardware wizard, and let it reinstall them, it didn't work. it reinstalled them, but they still have problems. it said to update them if that didn't work. i can't update them. the only update i have is for my dvd drive, and it's a cdrom disc that i can't put in cuz the drives don't work. there is no update for my cd drive. it's a LiteOn LTR 24102M HH CDRW drive. if anyone knows an update that isn't update 4DS7, then please let me know.

    Tuesday, April 24, 2007 8:33 PM
  • Are you sure it is set as master / slave accordingly through the jumpers?
    Wednesday, April 25, 2007 7:16 AM
  • regedit is  a program you run from the start menu, not a folder. To open it, click start, then click run, then type in regedit

When you get the registry editor open, you will see multiple keys, which are basically like folders, open those in the order previously defined.

  • I'm not really replying to this particular message, however, I am having the same problems as listed above.  Only, I haven't installed a new CD driver.  The driver that my new computer came with goes "missing".  I have no idea what make/model it is (like I said, its just the standard one that came with the computer), nor do I know how to go about finding that kind of information.  The help topics have been useless.  I used to just be able to restart my computer a few times and the device would eventually show up.  Now there is nothing I can do to make it work.  It doesn't show up in "my computer" or the "device manager".  When I open and close the driver, it makes noise like it registers and works but doesn't show up on the computer.

Can anyone help me?  I'm preparing for law school finals and desperatly need my classical music and the frusteration of this looming problem to go away

    Thank You!!!!

P.S.  I have a Compaq V3000 and am running XP.

    Saturday, April 28, 2007 5:49 PM
  • Okay, I did.  But there was no "upperfilter". I did delete the "lowerfilter" that was there. Restarted. And still nothing. Also, the CD-ROM option in my device manager doesn't show up anymore, so I can't delete it if its not there.

    Any other suggestions?

    Monday, April 30, 2007 6:35 PM
  • The only other suggestion I have would be to boot to the vista dvd, which is controlled by the bios of your pc, and not vista. When vista loads, either try and repair the existing installation or do a fresh install. Of course you'll probably want to go and buy an external drive or some other medium to back up any data you want to keep first until you have multiple drives in your system. Another option would be to contact Microsoft support and see what they have to say about it.
    Tuesday, May 1, 2007 3:05 AM
  • If microsoft update doesn't find a driver for it, then you'll probably want to contact HP.

  • Okay my dvd/cd rom drive does the same thing. I have Windows Vista Basic. My hardware is TSST corp CD/DVDW TS-H652M ATA Device.  I have a Compaq Presario. It actually says that the file is either missing or corrupt. There's a yellow triangle with an exclamation point in it when I go to Device Manager. Just had to add that. Thanks.

  • I have a PC running Windows Vista Business and it too has the drives displayed in the Device Manager with Code 39 errors. This seems to have happened since a Windows Update, but I don't know what update, as the system was working fine and we have NOT installed any other software or hardware. One of the drives is an NEC 3500A DVD and the other is a LG GSA-4040B.

If we remove the upper and lower filters from the registry, uninstall the drives and scan for hardware we get the drives back, however when we reboot we're back to the same issue with Code 39 errors.

I've noticed that there are loads of compliants about this issue on the web. So come on Microsoft sort it out!

  • I've got the same problem to where my drives (both Sony) don't show in 'computer' and can't be accessed by putting a CD in either drive.

In device manager, they show as a Yellow '!' triangle and I get the following: This device cannot start. (Code 10).

The drivers load but can't work for something is preventing them.

I looked for the same 'U&L keys' within Regedit but they don't exist.

    The closest is UpperFilters.

There are 2 sub-folders and a properties but none show the 'U&L keys'.

I'm using Vista and even removed any program that had anything to do with the drives.

I've even tried the Dell answer on this page of deleting the drive and rebooting that didn't help.

In researching this, under Vista, it seems to be possibly connected to the Ultimate version.

Can you provide any help for me?

  • Omg God Bless You.  I've had this problem for over a year and was ready to throw this thing out and get a new one.  The top drive had been messed up for the year and last week the bottom went out.  I was ready to scream. Out of desperation I started reading these posts and saw others had the same problem.  I figured I had nothing to lose so I went ahead and tried your remedy.  I am so tickled, IT WORKS.  Thank U, thank u , thank u.  Yes Virginia there is a Santa Claus , lol.  His name is Cavscout.

    Thanks again

  • Thanks Cavscout for the help, had this problem on a Dell 4600, which mysteriously lost both the CD /DVD drives which were on  the secondary IDE. Why I could not answer. I tried reinstalling drivers, even swapping over the IDE cables but the drives could not be accessed.

    Your solution fixed it.

  • Deleting UpperFilters worked for me, just restart your computer and it should start installing the driver and it should start working after it is installed.

  • hello there, rereading this message, I wondered if you can help me, I have a similar problem.  My dvd/cdrom driver is not working, it does not recognize any dvd or cd, I have not made any changes to it.  I tried to unistall, then reinstall it, and looking up updates, as it says in my gateway guide, but it does not work.  It does have a yellow thing under the driver

it says HL-DT-ST-DVD-RW GWA-4165B, i am trying to find the driver to be updated, but I haven't had any luck.  Hope you can give me an idea, I would greatly appreciated thankyou!

  • Okay, I believe I can help you.

    1. First off go to start, and search for regedit.
    2. Open it then go and open the folders in this order (It goes from the outer folders into the inner ones) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINES / SYSTEM/ CurrentControlSet / Control / Class/ {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    3. Then inside you should see a File that says UPPERFILTERS and/or LOWERFILTERS If only one is there it is fine. Delete them both, restart your computer and it should reinstall your driver.

  • The answer for about 95% of the "missing cd/dvd driver problem" is to use another DVD drive or copy the driver from XP on a USB and load the driver(s) when installing. You do this by going to the very next screen after the annoying "missing driver screen" and selecting "Repair Computer." Select "Load Drivers" then click "OK" on the add drivers dialog box. Find your usb driver, select, and you should be off and running. I personally have a cheap "EMPEREX DVD/RW" that I temporarily install just for installing VISTA because it works 100% of the time. This all a pain in the butt, however; once running, VISTA is worth the trouble. It is by far the best OS from MS.

MS simply cannot bundle every single driver into its OS in order to ensure 100% compatibility. This said, I believe they should at least offer a networked, online driver download just like when you install new hardware. I hope they're listening.

  • Thanks Buddy! This worked prefectly.

    I'm using Windows XP SP2

It was strange how my DVD drivers became corrupted automatically.

I received the yellow exclamation mark (!) on my DVD drive in device manager

and when I open up "My Computer" my DVD/CD drive was gone.

I was able to find the registry entry and deleted the "upperfilters" and "lowerfilters",

Uninstall and Reinstall the DVD/CD drives through device manager

and it was able to pick up the drivers automatically.

I've got at Acer at its been fine until a couple of weeks ago when it stopped recognising the dvd rw. I rang Acer tech support earlier in the week and they worked me through your solution. It worked! However next time I logged on it had stopped working again. So for the past 2 days sometimes its working and recognises the dvd rw, and most of the time it doesnt!!!

    Soooo frustrating!!

Any ideas how to fix this problem?

But I only found these two keys: UppeFilters REG_MULTI_SZ and LowerFiltersREG_MULTI_SZ.

    Are these the same thing?

    Please reply.

    Thanks.

  • you are a smart man, it worked for me as well, I had given up on this issue, I thought that I was no longer going to be able to use my DVD and CD-ROM drives, for almost a year now, and I saw your posting, it fixed right away, the only difference is that I had to delete the UpperFilter and the LowerFilter Keys on my comp. I did not find the UpperLimit and LowerLimit keys, I gave it a shot and it worked! I made copy of the keys just in case I would have done something wrong.

    Thanks for your help.

  • The fastest way to correct your problem without having to waste time downloading or obtaining and installing the drivers, which still might not work, is to buy a newer DVD drive. I bought an optiarc (by pioneer) for $30 and use it to install Vista. I remove the drive and then reinstall any other drive and let vista auto-install drivers for that drive once you have vista up and running. I know this is BS from M$ in not being able to ship with basic compatible drivers for the install but never-the-less, the new OS IS awesome once you get it running.

I tried this when i opend the folder there was no upper or lower any thing for a while it was showing up in safe mode

and i could hit reboot and it would come back i even did a total system restore on it twice. Hp will not help me because they said my pc is out of warrenty even tho i just bought it a few months ago from aarons sales. i havent installed any thing new on it. i have looked all over the net for cd/dvd/dvr drivers and cant find any i even went to the support page for the cd play roxie and they were of no help either,i was told it could be a virus so i tried 3 virus protectors (not installed at the same time) and each one said my pc was clean i even ran windows defender. i called a repair place and they said it would be cheaper to buy a new laptop then it would be to fix it. i just dont have that kind of money. does any one else have any more ideals?

  • This is the second machine that I have run into this problem. One is running Vista Home Premium and the other is Ultimate. I had to apply the registry edit to both machines. What I have noticed is that this occurred on each machine several weeks apart after the MS automatic update. I also noticed that the upper and lower limit values were different on each machine. However, one of the limit values referenced "Gear" software. I am running a Linksys NAS and the drive mapping utility and HP Print Server for the networked printer. I am not sure if it is the culprit. Since I did the regedit on the first machine, there has been no recurrence. I will have to wait and see what happens with the laptop.

    Thursday, February 28, 2008 2:15 PM
  • OK, I have the same issue and i have tried the follwing things but still no luck is there some one who has any idea how to fix this????????????

    1. I have tried to delete the upper and lower filter from the registry and do restart
    2. I have tried to uninstall the drivers from device manager and reinstall and do restart.
    3. Power cycle: I have removed the battery from my laptop and press the power button for few sec. and plug the ac adapter and start the computer. (Battery has nothing to do with the optical drive but i tired anyways)
    4. I have tried the fresh installation of vista and it did work but now its gone.
    5. I have tried the fresh installation of vista WITHOUT any updates but it still disappears
    6. I have tried uninstalling itunes software which suppose  interfere between music player and optical drive to recognize.
    7. I have uninstalled all the software that uses optical drive such as nero, roxio .... except Microsoft software
    8. I have tried to replace the optical drive with the new one.(i have tried about three of them with different brand names)

In all these experiment, it was fixed temporarily and the next thing you know that optical drive is not working again.

I have not tried to do fresh install of vista cause i have many programs on this computer but this is useless because every time if you are missing the drive you do not want to format the drive and reinstall the os.

Any other suggestions will be helpful
    Thanks so much!!!

  • Hey i have a ts-l632d disc drive that came with my dell inspiron E1505 6400 and ive had many problems with this laptop. Its already been through 1 full system restore due to a cd error and the wireless network option completely disappearing. They both got fixed after the restore, but the first cd error i looked into and found it in the device manager and i remember there being a exclamation point and i did all that reinstall and update stuff that it lets u do, that didnt fix it but anyways that was fixed after the restore. The cd drive worked for a month and then i think it just disappeared or something after it refused to eject a cd so i took a butter knife to it to unpry it rather vigorously. i wasnt smart enough or clearly thinking enough to easily pry it out through the screw connection thing (the screw disappeared from the socket at one point or time so the drive is not being held by anything other than friction and a tight fit). Well i got the cd out, and i then put it back in to make sure it was working. nothing happened as the cd was being read. so i go to my computer and D drive is gone completely, so i thought maybe another cd w/o any scratches would get a reaction. none such luck.

I have no idea at all when the D drive option went missing, but heres my theories:

    1. It went missing as soon as the cd failed to eject. i think it didnt eject b/c it lost power connection since it wasnt being held to the power supply thing since the screw wasnt there. i forgot that there wasnt a screw so i did my thing with a butter knife that i did before when a cd was half in half out of the drive. (yes my pc and i dont get along very well at times.)

    2. I go to device manager to look for the drive...its not an option and theres three exclamation points ONLY in the other devices portion where there are 3 exclamation point base devices that all seem identical under further investigation

    ------------------------------------------------------

Im only knowledgable with denihilating viruses and secretly installed files and a bit of scripting video games, and other media and graphical/design related stuff but registry files and many lettered and numbered named things i stay away from cause i dont hate my pc enough to blow its raw intelligence out by screwing w/ that stuff.

    ------------------------------------------------------

so its possible that these base devices are there and yes ive searched for hardware and got no further than the look at the hardware screen cause nothing obvious was awry. i only have gone crzy deleter once and that was when viruses attacked prior to system restore but they are all dead b/c i have a nice new etrust antivirus so viruses probably arent the instigators of this mess.

if theres not much to be salvaged from this mess, then i do have the means of getting a new drive but not anytime soon, and im trying to get a quick repair(temporary or not) until i do or need to get a new drive, but if anyone can recommend a $1-$200 drive that can write dvds play games and cds pretty well would be nice but i dont have the patience nor the vocab to understand products abilities and compatibilities.

i have not deleted the upper/lower stuff due to fear that that is not the issue and itll make things worse.

If anyone can make since of my post and mess and can help i would appreciate any suggestions and help.

  • Thank you!!!  My Cd\DVD player stopped working.  I was pretty upset and was going to call a tech when I got the money.  I followed your advise and it worked!! Thanks.

  • I am running Xp 64 and had the same issue. The dvd drive was working fine after I did a fresh install on a new PC I built. The nest day the VD drive was not seen in My Computer.

I followed the advice and deleted "lowerFilter" as recommended in the earlier post. I then uninstalled the drive in Device Manager, then scanned for hardware changes(icon in Device Manager).

    Everything works fine now.

    Thanks a lot to all.

  • I have the same problem, but I am attempting a CLEAN INSTALL of W2K8 RC2 on a Dell Precision T3400 machine with only the DVD-Rom attached and it's still giving me this error.  The DVD ROM model is TSST-corp DVD-ROM TS-H353B  Firmware ver D300.   Why can the setup NOT find the CD-ROM driver?

  • Go to the Dell Support page for Drivers and Firmware  http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&SystemID=DIM_PNT_P4_4300&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid= and enter in the correct information for your system (including the Service Tag number) and it will present you with driver and firmware options for your system (assuming it's the same CD driver that came with the system).  If it didn't come with the system, you'll need to go to the manufacturer's web site to find the proper drivers and firmware.

  • Score another one for Cavscout -- this worked perfectly on my Toshiba Satellite M305D-S4833 with a misbehaving TSST Corp. CDDVDW TS-L633P ATA Device!  Except the keys are "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters", as mentioned by others following.

Now if I could just get my Windows Vista Ulimate Anytime Upgrade to perform an UPGRADE instead of the CLEAN INSTALL that it insists on doing.  Any ideas?

  • Dell Precision M4600 (64 bit W7)

DVD drive always worked, but suddenly appears no longer to working

exclamation mark and none loading DVD driver (Code39) same issue as  many other were experiencing above.

Installing the driver system tells me I already have the best driver

Uninstalling and installing gives me the same error back

    >HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

My system only had 'lowerfilters' (no upper) , after deleting that lowerfilter key, uninstalling the driver, searching new hardware, the driver reinstalled and it all worked again!!
