Remove inactive users from WSS 3.0 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

I have a SharePoint environment with proper installation of WSS 3.0 and only Service Packs of MOSS for SSP. I want to remove the Incative users (now totally more than 800 users are present) from my SharePoint site.

In SP 2010, there is a job called "My Site Cleaning Job" which is scheduled to remove the inactive users. In MOSS 2007, there is option like "User Profiles and My Sites" option where we can filter to remove the inactive users.

Can anyone help in doing the same in WSS 3.0 environment. There are no options like User Profiles and Properties in SSP, since it is not MOSS environment.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Cheers!

  • Hi Muruthu,

You can refer some old threads from technet

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-ZA/sharepointadmin/thread/d152f6e5-d295-4eca-bca0-8fc616e8a7d4

which says to remove user from All People manually.

    or

http://sharepointpsscripts.codeplex.com/releases/view/21693 a automated way needs a list of inactive users from AD

    or

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/sharepointgeneral/thread/336dff45-4bfd-4bcf-a3a3-5333c2d393c6

    Hope this will help you

  • Hi Pratik,

    Thanks for the reply.

As mentioned in the first link, it is easy to remove the users from the site by manually. But how we will be able to know "Which user is not using the site for longtime" ?

The codeplez site gives a .ps script which is a powershell script to find the inactive users in the site but I am not sure about running a powershell script in Win Server 2003 environment.

The third link is not useful in this case, since I have already mentioned in the question, I donot have options for User Profile and Properties option since it is WSS 3.0 and I could see only SSP in the central admin.

Any help/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi,

In MOSS Content Dbs there is a table UserInfo where there is a column iSActiveuser that shows if a user is active or not.

Check this in your WSS db as well if it is present there or not.

I hope this will help you out.

  • Hi Rashu,

    Thanks for the reply.

I have checked the WSS content DB and I could see UserInfo table in it. Also, I have queried and retrieved the users from it. IsActive column with values 0 and 1 are present (true and false).

If the value is 0 then the user is In active. I have the checked the users with value 0 and found that

    1. Some users are removed from the AD and hence the value is 0

    2. The Value is 0 for some users who are not using the site for long time but present in the AD

Is that advisable to remove the users of both the kind ?

What does this column IsActive specify in particular ?

    Thanks in Advance!
