Putting Lync Standard server in an Exchange server

Question
-
We already have two Exchange 2010 servers in our small company:
HT and CAS roles in one server
Mailbox role in a 2nd serverIn order to reduce Windows O/S license fee, we would like to know if it's possible to install Lync 2010 Standard Edition in any one of our existing Exchange 2010 servers mentioned above.
In a previous discussion, thanks to Alanmad, I understand that Lync 2010 Standard has to install SQL Express in the server. Does SQL Express work along with Exchange? Or would there be some potential conflict?
Thanks in advance.

No, Lync is not supported on Exchange Server.
Below is the MINIMUM topology that is supported:
http://windowspbx.blogspot.com/2012/05/lync-topology-for-smallpilot-lync.htmlAs I stated in a previous discussion, you can have Exchange VM and Lync VM on one physical box, but Lync installed on same OS as Exchange is not supported.

Hi Matt, thanks for your reply.
By "support", I understand you meant "support" by Microsoft. But if I put aside this Microsoft support thingy, could I install them together? (I mean, if I were Microsoft, I would certainly say "this is not supported, that is not supported" even though they are compatible, just to make sure people buy more Windows Server 2008 R2 O/S licenses.)
PS: Your link points to a page which does not exist.

hmm, the url works here.
also, i would not install Lync on Exchange.
if you cannot afford another OS, you cannot affort Lync. Get Office365. ;-)
How big is your company?
Are your 2 Exchange servers currently VM's?

My company is Microsoft Gold Partner and we are entitled to two Windows Server 2008 R2. Unless we get it wrong, we are entitled to Lync 2010 as well.
We have already paid an addition MSDN subscription to have one more Windows Server 2008 R2 license (and other licenses, of course). We are struggling to stay within legality with Microsoft, if only they could be more "honest" in those "system requirements" with its customers.
That is to say that if we are not 100% required to buy an addition O/S license, we really don't want to.

Agree with Matt. It is not supported. If you try you will end up breaking Exchange and Lync won't work properly. Both heavily rely on the same windows components like IIS. It will be a mess. If you did somehow get both to work correctly, you will probably have to implement quite a few "tweaks/hacks".

Hi,
You cannot collocate any Exchange Unified Messaging component or SharePoint component with any Lync Server role.
You can find it here.

It is possible but it's a compelte mess as previously mentioned. You'll have to assign multiple IP addresses to the server so that Exchange services can listen on one IP and Lync services on another IP since they both need to use common ports like 443, 80, 5061, etc.
I wouldn't even do this in a test lab as it wil probably require so much tweaking to even get working, and even then might not be stable or fully functional.
The other problem is that you will have two separate database engines installed on the same server (SQL Express for Lync, ESE for Exchange) and I can only iagine the performance of that single server will be quite bad. Disk contention will be quite high.

Not just Exchange UM, but attempts to collocate just about any non-Lync (Exchange mailbox/hub/etc., AD domain controller, SharePoint, SQL, Forefront TMG, etc.) or non Lync-approved server roles in a production environment should be avoided due to various cited reasons (time, resources, support, etc.).TechNet/MSDN Forum Moderator (Unified Communications) - http://www.leedesmond.com
