Prevent local search from the start menu RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

We are trying to prevent students from being able to search the PC for different applications, through the start menu. We have changed how the start menu looks so they have everything they need. We have also removed the search box.

The reason we want to do this is because students can right click on a searched application and go to the file location.

Is there a solution to this?

    Many thanks,

    Melladay

  • One way would be disable the Indexing, if you open start and search for Index Options and disable it.

Other solution would be disabling access to files and areas by configure student account to have no access to those locations like disable read/write/edit and other permissions.

  • Hi Melladay,

Disabling the search box cannot prevent user from programs. Since he can access programs via other methods.

Here I suggest you use the AppLocker feature to prevent users or group to access specific programs if your computer is Windows 10 Enterprise.

    AppLocker

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/device-security/applocker/applocker-overview

If it's Windows 10 Pro, please consider Software restriction to do that.

If your students are smart enough, they can search apps from File Explorer, you also need to configure NTFS for specific programs.

    Regards
