MMC Snap-in Error W2003SP2 using "Users & Computers" RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am unable to access user properties in "Users and Computers" on Windows Server 2003 x64 (DC)

    Errors: "MMC has detected an error in a snap-in. It is recommended that you shut down and restart MMC"

    If I "Report this error to Microsoft, and then shut down MMC" I receive the following MMC Error Signature:

    AppName: mmc.exe AppVer: 5.2.3790.3959
    ModName: ntdll.dll
    ModVer: 5.2.3790.4789
    Offset: 000000000003602a

    * Issue on Windows Server 2003 x64 with SP2
    * MMC Console 3.0 installed
    * A New Windows 2008 (DC) was recently added to the domain
    * If I register the dll (regsvr32 ntdll.dll) then it says "the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found"

  • Try to obtain the following hotfix:

    In an Active Directory forest that is running a Windows Server 2008 schema, the Active Directory Users and Computers MMC snap-in may crash when you open the Properties dialog box for a user object from a Windows Server 2003 member server

    Error message when you use MMC 3.0: "MMC has detected error in a snap-in"

  • Many Thanks for your assistance.

    I have run the hotfix above as suggested, but just need to reboot the system and confirm if the issues reoccurs.

    All seems to work without the error after this fix was applied.
